A religious studies associate professor at The University of Toledo will address the question \u201cIs ISIS Islamic?\u201d at a previously scheduled talk made more noteworthy after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. <\/p>\n

Dr. Ovamir Anjum, the Imam Khattab Chair of Islamic Studies, will give the talk Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 9:30 a.m. in the UT Center for Religious Understanding in University Hall Room 4700.<\/p>\n

Anjum<\/p><\/div>\u201cISIS is not Islamic. ISIS is Saddam Hussein reaching out of his grave for revenge,\u201d he said. \u201cModern scholars across the globe, both Sunni and Shia, have condemned ISIS as modern-day Kharijites \u2014\u00a0a heretical group known for its violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The free, public talk is part of a fall series called \u201cWindows on Contemporary Islamic Issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the attacks on Paris, Anjum said it is crucial not to play into the hands of terrorists.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a political fight,\u201d Anjum said. \u201cISIS coordinated the attacks because it doesn\u2019t want refugees to find refuge in the West.\u201d<\/p>\n
