Roosevelt\u2019s New Deal mandates, particularly the Works Progress Administration (WPA), is credited for helping the economy, lowering poverty, and bringing down unemployment rates.<\/p>\n<p>Another WPA impact, one that\u2019s rarely considered, is the way the program benefited disabled individuals in the workplace, schools and society. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_37675\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_15_2016\/how-new-deal-helped-americans-with-disabilities-topic-of-jan-19-talk\/serlin\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37675\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37675\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Serlin.jpg\" alt=\"Serlin\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Serlin.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Serlin-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-37675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serlin<\/p><\/div>The Works Progress Administration has been frequently criticized for its exclusion of disabled people, but on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m., Dr. David Serlin, associate professor of communication at the University of California in San Diego, will present evidence that the WPA did benefit and employ a number of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Serlin\u2019s talk, \u201cCripping the WPA: Designing for Disability in New Deal America,\u201d will be held in Libbey Hall, a building constructed by the WPA in 1935. The event will run from 6:30 until 9 p.m., and desserts and beverages will be served.<\/p>\n<p>Serlin received his PhD in American studies from New York University in 1999 and has done research on historical and cultural approaches to disability.
