Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was the first woman to graduate from Syracuse Medical College in 1855. She was a doctor for the Union in the Civil War, a prisoner of war in Virginia, and received the U.S. Armed Forces’ Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery. <\/p>\n

Storyteller Sheila Otto will recreate Walker\u2019s energy with her program, \u201cThis Doctor Makes House Calls in History,\u201d at the Satellites Auxiliary\u2019s luncheon Tuesday, April 26, in Health Education Building Room 103.<\/p>\n

Walker<\/p><\/div>Those who attend may bring their own lunches to the free event, or they may pay $7 for a box lunch that will include a beverage and specialty dessert.<\/p>\n

Cash or check payable to the Satellites Auxiliary will be accepted. Complimentary valet service will be available for the event at the Orthopaedics’ entrance.<\/p>\n

Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with Otto\u2019s talk at 12:15 p.m.<\/p>\n

Walker was a dynamo, leading reforms her whole life. She was a suffragist, abolitionist, temperance advocate and author. She also was president of the Dress Reform Association.<\/p>\n

The Satellites Auxiliary is a volunteer group designed to promote education, research and service programs; provide support of patient programs in accordance with the needs and approval of administration; conduct fundraising events; and provide services.<\/p>\n
