The immune system is our defense shield, continuously defending us against illness and disease. <\/p>\n<p>A study by researchers at The University of Toledo and Cleveland Clinic revealed a new pathway in the way the body fights disease.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_40020\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=40020\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40020\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40020\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Chattopadhyay.png\" alt=\"Chattopadhyay\" width=\"239\" height=\"360\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Chattopadhyay.png 239w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Chattopadhyay-199x300.png 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chattopadhyay<\/p><\/div>\u201cThe immune system is made up of two categories: the innate and the adaptive,\u201d said Dr. Saurabh Chattopadhyay, UT assistant professor of medical microbiology and immunology. \u201cBoth are required for a successful defense against virus infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The innate immune system is the body\u2019s first line of defense. It must activate quickly and correctly to begin the elimination of viruses from the body. The adaptive immune system is dependent on the innate system and is activated at a later stage. The innate immune system triggers sensors within the body\u2019s cells, creating antiviral proteins called interferons that serve as messengers alerting uninfected cells of the unwanted virus.<\/p>\n<p>But viruses don\u2019t give up easily. Some have evolved to find ways to dodge the body\u2019s defenses. Fortunately, our bodies have yet another way to fight back against stubborn viruses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a new line of defense, virus-infected cells rely on a mechanism called apoptosis, or premature suicide, in order to keep the virus from spreading,\u201d Chattopadhyay said. \u201cIn this process, proteins in the cells are activated, causing the infected cells to be killed in an effort to efficiently remove virus from our bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A recent study by Chattopadhyay and his team revealed a new way the body triggers this process.
