{"id":41154,"date":"2016-09-13T03:43:15","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T07:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=41154"},"modified":"2016-09-13T08:56:12","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T12:56:12","slug":"ut-set-to-recognize-hispanic-heritage-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_13_2016\/ut-set-to-recognize-hispanic-heritage-month","title":{"rendered":"UT set to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with several events to spotlight the culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe celebration of Hispanic heritage is important\u00a0to our campus and everyone around us because\u00a0it\u2019s the perfect opportunity\u00a0for us to share\u00a0the history of our ancestors and helps create an intimate knowledge of the role that Latinos have played in U.S. history with other cultures,\u201d Arturo Ordo\u00f1ez Vazquez, graduate assistant for Latino initiatives in the Office of Multicultural Student Success, said. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_13_2016\/ut-set-to-recognize-hispanic-heritage-month\/hispanic-heritage-month-2016\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41221\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/hispanic-heritage-month-2016.jpg\" alt=\"hispanic heritage month 2016\" width=\"538\" height=\"833\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-41221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/hispanic-heritage-month-2016.jpg 538w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/hispanic-heritage-month-2016-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0beneficial for Latinos to see their own faces reflected in the history of our country because it creates a connection between\u00a0current\u00a0generations and the\u00a0past ones, motivating our people\u00a0to start thinking about how they can also contribute and make a difference themselves. Our ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Listed by date, the events facilitated through the UT Office of Multicultural Student Success and Latino Student Union include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Sept. 15 <\/strong>\u2014\u00a0Latino Student, Faculty and Staff Meet-and-Greet, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Student Union Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, Sept. 21<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0South American and Hispanic Students\u2019 Association Cultural Presentation, 6 to 8 p.m., Student Union Room 2500.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Sept. 22<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Diamante Awards, 6 to 9 p.m., Sofia Quintero Art &#038; Cultural Center, 1225 Broadway St. Awards for Latino leadership and achievements in northwest Ohio will be presented at this event, which is co-sponsored by The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, Owens Community College and Herzing University. Tickets are $75 for the public and $25 for students in advance at <a href=\"http:\/\/diamantetoledo.org\">diamantetoledo.org<\/a> and will be $80 and $30, respectively, at the door.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, Sept. 26<\/strong> \u2014 Zumba classes featuring Latino culture and music, Student Recreation Center. Classes offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m.; Aqua Zumba from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u00a0Latinos in Leadership Panel, 6 p.m., Student Union Room 2592.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, Sept. 27<\/strong> \u2014 Zumba Class featuring Latino culture and music, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., Student Recreation Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, Sept. 28<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0South American and Hispanic Students\u2019 Association Cultural Presentation, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Student Union Room 2500.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday, Sept. 30 <\/strong>\u2014 \u201c14 the Movie,\u201d 7 p.m., Student Union Room 2592. A question-and-answer session will follow the screening of the free, public documentary that explores birthrights and citizenship.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nWednesday, Oct. 5<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Speaker: Dr. Emanual Maverakis, associate professor in the Department of Dermatology, Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California at Davis, 6 p.m., Wolfe Hall Room 1205. This free, public event is presented by We Are STEMM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Oct. 6 <\/strong>\u2014\u00a0Vince Acevedo Comedy Show, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Student Union Auditorium. This free, public show is part of Holy Toledo Laughfest, a monthlong celebration of comedy that includes performances throughout the Glass City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, Oct. 10<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Latino Student Union\u2019s Loteria Night, 7 to 8 p.m., Student Union Room 2592.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, Oct. 11<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Escucha Nuestras Voces\/Hear Our Voices Panel, 7 to 8:30 p.m., location to be announced. Sponsored by LGBTQ and Latino initiatives, this event will feature Latinos sharing their stories about coming out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Oct. 13<\/strong> \u2014 Zumba classes featuring Latino culture and music, Student Recreation Center.
