{"id":41415,"date":"2016-10-03T03:43:07","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T07:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=41415"},"modified":"2016-09-29T16:55:35","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T20:55:35","slug":"researcher-receives-grant-to-study-removal-of-algal-bloom-toxins-from-drinking-water-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/10_03_2016\/researcher-receives-grant-to-study-removal-of-algal-bloom-toxins-from-drinking-water-sources","title":{"rendered":"Researcher receives grant to study removal of algal bloom toxins from drinking water sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Science Foundation awarded a civil and environmental engineer at The University of Toledo a $224,937 grant to study a sustainable approach to water treatment and filtering toxins from harmful algal blooms.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Youngwoo Seo, associate professor of civil engineering and chemical and environmental engineering, will lead the three-year project titled \u201cEngineering Biofilm Dynamics for Cyanotoxins in Biological Water Treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_41479\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=41479\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41479\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41479\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Seo.jpg\" alt=\"Seo\" width=\"252\" height=\"379\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Seo.jpg 252w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Seo-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seo<\/p><\/div>Seo is seeking to better understand how bacteria works in order to improve the filters that remove harmful toxins from drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect the public from emerging contaminants like cyanotoxins in drinking water sources, various advanced water treatment processes are considered,\u201d Seo said. \u201cHowever, these processes commonly require high-energy demand and operation cost with proper waste management.
