{"id":41626,"date":"2016-10-14T03:13:08","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T07:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=41626"},"modified":"2016-10-12T10:19:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-12T14:19:37","slug":"ut-student-places-in-national-video-contest-travels-to-d-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/10_14_2016\/ut-student-places-in-national-video-contest-travels-to-d-c","title":{"rendered":"UT student places in national video contest, travels to D.C."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A video Kennedy Pierce created about her internship experiences landed The University of Toledo student a ticket to the nation\u2019s capital for the Washington Center\u2019s prestigious awards gala.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce, a third-year student at UT studying psychology, placed second in the Washington Center\u2019s alumni intern video contest, which led to her escorting Congressman Elijah Cummings, the recipient of the 2016 Pillar Award for Professional Achievement, to the ceremony Sept. 26 in Washington, D.C. It is the center\u2019s largest event featuring leaders of business, government and higher education.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_41779\" style=\"width: 478px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=41779\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41779\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Kennedy-Pierce-and-Ericka-Castillo-at-gala.jpg\" alt=\"Kennedy Pierce, left, and her roommate, Ericka Castillo, a UT student majoring in nursing who is in the ROTC Program, attended the Washington Center\u2019s Gala Sept. 26.\" width=\"468\" height=\"567\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Kennedy-Pierce-and-Ericka-Castillo-at-gala.jpg 468w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Kennedy-Pierce-and-Ericka-Castillo-at-gala-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennedy Pierce, left, and her roommate, Ericka Castillo, a UT student majoring in nursing who is in the ROTC Program, attended the Washington Center\u2019s Gala Sept. 26.<\/p><\/div>Through the Washington Center, Pierce interned for the United States Marshals Service in the Management Support Division in the Office of Fleet Management last summer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helped me narrow my focus on the things I need to make sure I accomplish until I am old enough to apply for a federal agency,\u201d she said. \u201cI learned how critical work experience and internships are in building a resum\u00e9 and making contacts, as well as staying involved and making sure your academics are the best they can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce, who plans to relocate to the Washington, D.C., area after graduation, said the internship opened her eyes to the competition in her prospective career field.<\/p>\n<p>She was one of two alumni of the program flown to the capital for the gala through the contest that had the students create a 30-second video that described how the center helped provide leadership opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2028In addition to her Washington Center internship, Pierce has worked for U.S. Sen. Rob Portman\u2019s campaign, Future Agents in Training, and on a mission trip to Haiti.
