{"id":41668,"date":"2016-10-17T03:16:13","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T07:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=41668"},"modified":"2016-10-12T10:55:59","modified_gmt":"2016-10-12T14:55:59","slug":"book-on-global-brewing-industry-dedicated-to-late-ut-grad-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/10_17_2016\/book-on-global-brewing-industry-dedicated-to-late-ut-grad-student","title":{"rendered":"Book on global brewing industry dedicated to late UT grad student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Moore enjoyed sharing a pint of cold beer, but had no thirst for the standard domestic titans.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Toledo PhD student researcher was a craft beer aficionado who found a way to combine his passion with his academic work.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_41785\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=41785\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41785\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41785\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-sandpiper.jpg\" alt=\"Moore\" width=\"360\" height=\"361\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-sandpiper.jpg 360w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-sandpiper-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-sandpiper-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moore<\/p><\/div>\u201cHe loved geography and craft beer,\u201d Andy Moore, Mike\u2019s brother, said.<\/p>\n<p>Moore\u2019s research on the rapidly growing artisanal industry recently was published more than a year after he died at the age of 34 from an aortic aneurysm while at a local brewpub.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe large vessel that comes out of the heart ruptured unexpectedly,\u201d Andy said. \u201cDoctors told our family it\u2019s very rare for someone that young. The fact that it happened where it did is so unusual because we loved to hang out there and watch a Tigers game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike enjoyed debating varieties of hops and India pale ales as much and as easily as he dove into complex statistical analyses of the industry,\u201d said Dr. Neil Reid, professor of geography and planning and director of the Jack Ford Urban Affairs Center, who is known as UT\u2019s \u201cBeer Professor.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s devastating and sad, yet if he had to choose how to go, that\u2019s what he would\u2019ve chosen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_41786\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=41786\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41786\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41786\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-brother-with-Neil-Reid-and-Mikes-brother.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Neil Reid and Andy Moore, Mike Moore\u2019s brother, got together recently at the Black Cloister Brewing Co. in Toledo.\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-brother-with-Neil-Reid-and-Mikes-brother.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-brother-with-Neil-Reid-and-Mikes-brother-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Neil Reid and Andy Moore, Mike Moore\u2019s brother, got together recently at the Black Cloister Brewing Co. in Toledo.<\/p><\/div>The editors of a new volume published on the craft brewing industry called <em>Brewing, Beer and Pubs: A Global Perspective<\/em> dedicated their book to Moore, who co-authored a chapter with Reid and Ralph McLaughlin, a colleague from California. The chapter is titled \u201cThe Locational Determinants of Micro-Breweries and Brewpubs in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The editors wrote in the dedication at the beginning of the book, \u201cIt is very fitting that Mike passed away in a local brewery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore collapsed and fell to the floor April 8, 2015, as he was sitting on a bar stool enjoying a beer.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_41787\" style=\"width: 287px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=41787\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41787\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41787\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-Beer-Black-Cloister-Michaels-Memory.jpg\" alt=\"The Black Cloister Brewing Co. last year created a beer in Mike Moore\u2019s honor: Michael\u2019s Memory. \" width=\"277\" height=\"504\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-Beer-Black-Cloister-Michaels-Memory.jpg 277w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Mike-Moore-Beer-Black-Cloister-Michaels-Memory-165x300.jpg 165w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Black Cloister Brewing Co. last year created a beer in Mike Moore\u2019s honor: Michael\u2019s Memory.<\/p><\/div>\u201cI was sitting next to him when it happened. We were drinking Summer Stinger, an American pale wheat ale that was just bottled the day before,\u201d Reid said. \u201cWe were talking with a visiting scholar from Turkey about our upcoming trip to a geographers\u2019 conference and attending the Beeronomics Conference in Seattle in the fall when I heard a thud. I thought a bar stool had fallen over. I looked down and Mike was on his back on the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still hard for our family and Mike\u2019s longtime girlfriend, Jeanette, to process, but seeing Mike\u2019s work being published and honored helps us find closure,\u201d Andy said.<\/p>\n<p>Moore was a doctoral student studying spatially integrated social sciences in UT\u2019s Department of Geography and Planning.<\/p>\n<p>His dissertation \u2014 left incomplete \u2014 was an examination of the spatial dynamics of the American craft beer industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe craft brewing industry is growing so fast and changing the whole brewing landscape,\u201d Reid said. \u201cMike analyzed where it\u2019s growing and why. He was well on his way to being a really successful academic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UT posthumously awarded Moore a PhD based on his completed course work and publications while a student.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Geography and Planning created a scholarship in his memory for UT students pursuing the geography and planning field. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss our Monday morning meetings and the occasional exchanging of beer-related gifts,\u201d Reid said. \u201cI cherish the memories \u2014 memories, by and large, created around a common love and appreciation of craft beer, the people who brew it, and the people who drink it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Black Cloister Brewery in downtown Toledo created a special brew last year to commemorate Moore\u2019s life and called it Michael\u2019s Memory. The owners contributed some of the profits to the scholarship fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outpouring of support is amazing and unexpected,\u201d Andy said. \u201cIt\u2019s excellent to see the fruit of all the research he had done.
