{"id":45778,"date":"2017-08-02T03:54:13","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T07:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=45778"},"modified":"2017-08-07T15:16:32","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T19:16:32","slug":"watch-total-solar-eclipse-at-ut-aug-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/08_02_2017\/watch-total-solar-eclipse-at-ut-aug-21","title":{"rendered":"Watch total solar eclipse at UT Aug. 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, Aug. 21, a total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of the United States mainland for the first time in 38 years.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Toledo\u2019s Ritter Planetarium will host a free viewing event for the public from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on the campus lawn between Ritter and McMaster Hall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/08_02_2017\/watch-total-solar-eclipse-at-ut-aug-21\/eclipse-where-will-you-be\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-45779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/eclipse-where-will-you-be.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-45779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/eclipse-where-will-you-be.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/eclipse-where-will-you-be-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe will be able to see an approximately 80 percent eclipse from Toledo, weather permitting,\u201d said Alex Mak, UT associate planetarium director. \u201cThis is a rare opportunity, and we want to celebrate with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UT astronomers will have several safely filtered telescopes set up outside looking at the eclipse. A limited supply of solar eclipse glasses will be for sale for $2 each.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also will have a couple dozen \u2018Personal Solar Observatory Boxes\u2019 people can use at no cost,\u201d Mak said.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of clouds, a web stream of the eclipse from other locations across the country will be playing in McMaster Hall Room 1005.<\/p>\n<p>Ritter Planetarium\u2019s next three Friday night programs will focus on the eclipse. Programs are at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4, 11 and 18. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for members of the UT community. Children younger than 12 and senior citizens are free. For more information, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/ritter.utoledo.edu\">ritter.utoledo.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mak also is giving free, public talks about the upcoming solar eclipse at branches of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library as part of a grant UT received from the American Astronomical Association. The workshops are primarily intended for children. Guests receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses, informational handouts and planetarium guest passes.
