The University of Toledo has partnered with the Toledo Symphony to welcome Broadway star and Tony- and Grammy-winning performer Audra McDonald to town.<\/p>\n

McDonald will share the story of her career, both as a singer and an actress on Broadway, opera stages, film and television, at the Edward Shapiro Distinguished Lecture Sunday, Nov. 5 from noon to 2 p.m. in Doermann Theater.<\/p>\n

McDonald<\/p><\/div>McDonald\u2019s lecture at UT will follow her performance with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.<\/p>\n

“The opportunity to engage in a conversation with an artist of Audra McDonald’s stature is an honor and a privilege for our students\u00a0and\u00a0the greater Toledo community,\u201d said Charlene Gilbert, dean of the UT College of Arts and Letters.\u00a0\u201cWe are pleased to partner with the Toledo Symphony to bring this internationally renowned performer to campus following her Toledo performance. This lecture is exactly the type of event that shapes and enriches the academic experience of our students and engages the community with our university.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

McDonald is the winner of a record-breaking six Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award. She was named one of Time magazine\u2019s 100 most influential people of 2015, and she received a 2015 National Medal of Arts \u2014 America\u2019s highest honor for achievement in the arts \u2014 from President Barack Obama. <\/p>\n

In addition to her Tony-winning performances, including \u201cCarousel,\u201d \u201cA Raisin in the Sun\u201d and \u201cPorgy and Bess,\u201d she has appeared on Broadway in \u201cThe Secret Garden,\u201d \u201cMarie Christine\u201d (Tony nomination) and \u201c110 in the Shade\u201d (Tony nomination).<\/p>\n

On television, McDonald played Mother Abbess in NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Sound of Music Live!\u201d and Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC\u2019s \u201cPrivate Practice.\u201d She won an Emmy Award for her role as host of PBS\u2019s \u201cLive from Lincoln Center.\u201d On film, she has appeared in \u201cSeven Servants,\u201d \u201cThe Object of My Affection,\u201d \u201cCradle Will Rock,\u201d \u201cIt Runs in the Family,\u201d \u201cThe Best Thief in the World,\u201d \u201cShe Got Problems,\u201d \u201cRampart, Ricki and the Flash\u201d and, most recently, Disney\u2019s live-action \u201cBeauty and the Beast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doors will open for McDonald\u2019s free, public lecture at 11:30 a.m. with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. <\/p>\n

Tickets remain available for McDonald\u2019s performance with the Toledo Symphony. Tickets range from $49 to $99 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 419.246.8000 or visiting toledosymphony.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The annual lecture is made possible by the Shapiro endowment left by Dr. Edward Shapiro, professor emeritus of economics, who retired in 1989 and wanted to provide opportunities for the University to bring world-renowned speakers to Toledo.<\/p>\n
