{"id":48413,"date":"2018-02-15T03:25:54","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T07:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=48413"},"modified":"2018-02-13T17:04:44","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T21:04:44","slug":"ut-to-celebrate-engineers-week-by-inspiring-wonder-in-elementary-high-school-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_15_2018\/ut-to-celebrate-engineers-week-by-inspiring-wonder-in-elementary-high-school-students","title":{"rendered":"UT to celebrate Engineers Week by inspiring wonder in elementary, high school students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo will bring engineering to life for elementary and high school students in celebration of Engineers Week. <\/p>\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s events is \u201cInspiring Wonder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=48472\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48472\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Engineering-Week.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"343\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-48472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Engineering-Week.png 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Engineering-Week-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Discover Engineering is a free, public event geared toward elementary school students and their families; it will take place Sunday, Feb. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Lois and Norman Nitschke Auditorium. It includes a showing of the movie \u201cDream Big,\u201d followed by hands-on activities organized by College of Engineering students.<\/p>\n<p>The College of Engineering also will host its first Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day for students in fifth through eighth grades. Starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, girls from the Toledo area will tour UT\u2019s engineering facilities and have lunch with College of Engineering students and professional engineers before spending the afternoon doing hands-on activities.<\/p>\n<p>Area high school students will get the opportunity to be an Engineer for a Day Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 9 a.m. on when they tour UT\u2019s engineering facilities and have lunch with College of Engineering students and professional engineers before spending the afternoon shadowing a practicing engineering professional in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipants will learn that engineering is not just about being good at math and science. It requires curiosity, creativity and teamwork, and it is also fun,\u201d said Dr. Lesley Berhan, associate professor in the UT Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and interim assistant dean of diversity, inclusion and community engagement. \u201cAbout 20 percent of engineering degrees nationwide are awarded to women. We hope the students are inspired to see their future selves working in one of the many different fields of engineering to design, invent and create things to make our world better, safer, healthier and cleaner.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University is gearing up to celebrate Engineers Week.
