{"id":48807,"date":"2018-03-12T03:40:59","date_gmt":"2018-03-12T07:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=48807"},"modified":"2018-03-11T16:42:52","modified_gmt":"2018-03-11T20:42:52","slug":"women-philanthropy-to-donate-1000-books-to-second-grade-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_12_2018\/women-philanthropy-to-donate-1000-books-to-second-grade-classrooms","title":{"rendered":"Women &#038; Philanthropy to donate 1,000 books to second-grade classrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women &#038; Philanthropy and the Judith Herb College of Education at The University of Toledo are donating approximately 1,000 books to Toledo Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p>The books will be distributed to 33 second-grade classrooms at 19 TPS schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_22_2018\/apply-for-2018-grant-from-women-up-to-76000-available\/women-philanthropy-logo-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Women-Philanthropy-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"408\" height=\"540\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-48150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Women-Philanthropy-logo.jpg 408w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Women-Philanthropy-logo-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a>Marcy McMahon, the chair of Women &#038; Philanthropy, and Dr. Romules Durant, TPS superintendent, will present the books to representatives of each school Thursday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Old Orchard Elementary School. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond grade is a critical year for learning to read,\u201d said Dr. Thea Sawicki, chair of the Holiday Project for Women &#038; Philanthropy and professor in the UT Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. \u201cChoosing one grade to focus on allows us to support more schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of its 2017 Holiday Project titled \u201cEncouraging Early Literacy,\u201d Women &#038; Philanthropy partnered with the UT Judith Herb College of Education to raise funds to provide scholastic books for elementary classrooms in TPS schools. Women &#038; Philanthropy will continue to raise funds throughout 2018 with the goal of donating books to all second-grade classrooms in each of the 40 TPS schools this year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur faculty is deeply committed to working collaboratively with our school partners to improve early literacy,\u201d said Dr. Virginia Keil, interim dean of the UT Judith Herb College of Education. \u201cOur partnership with Woman &#038; Philanthropy has allowed the college to work with TPS leaders to place high-interest books in second-grade classrooms.
