Because electronic devices become obsolete faster than any other tools used, and most contain hazardous and environmentally damaging materials, both the cost and consequences of disposing of these devices can add up fast.<\/p>\n
The University of Toledo has partnered with Affinity Information Management (AIM), electronic recycling and document destruction specialists located in Sylvania, to handle the disposal of all campus electronic equipment.<\/p>\n
Before switching to AIM, broken or obsolete equipment had to be taken apart, separated by component, and individually packaged before it could be collected for disposal. Now equipment from any campus location will be picked up and recycled within 48 hours of notification.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis new way of recycling has saved the University in a number of ways,\u201d explained Daniel Royer, UT manager of building services and recycling. \u201cWe will avoid charges to throw away equipment that could not be recycled; lower transportation, packaging and shipping costs; and eliminate the fees associated with dealing with the heavy metals found in older monitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Free pickup can be arranged for most electronic devices, including computers, laptops, printers, modems, radios, cables, cell phones, monitors, telephone equipment, game consoles and fax machines.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is in keeping with the University\u2019s commitment to be good environmental stewards,\u201d Royer said. \u201cWe are constantly looking for new ways to make the University, community and the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n
