{"id":49854,"date":"2018-05-14T03:25:03","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T07:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=49854"},"modified":"2018-05-11T16:53:31","modified_gmt":"2018-05-11T20:53:31","slug":"teams-across-region-to-calibrate-water-quality-sensors-for-lake-erie-buoy-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_14_2018\/teams-across-region-to-calibrate-water-quality-sensors-for-lake-erie-buoy-network","title":{"rendered":"Teams across region to calibrate water-quality sensors for Lake Erie buoy network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists from nearly a dozen organizations throughout the region are visiting The University of Toledo Lake Erie Center Tuesday, May 15, to calibrate equipment that will be deployed in buoys across Lake Erie to measure water quality throughout algal bloom season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like in the old movies when the mission leader says, \u2018Let\u2019s synchronize our watches,\u2019 before the team splits up,\u201d Dr. Tom Bridgeman, UT professor of ecology and director of the UT Lake Erie Center, said. \u201cThis collaboration helps to ensure conformity of data coming from the probes for the next few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_49866\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=49866\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-49866\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49866\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Buoy-shot-by-Dan-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Buoy-shot-by-Dan-2017.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Buoy-shot-by-Dan-2017-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UT\u2019s water quality and sensor buoy annually rides the waves off the shore of the Maumee Bay State Park Lodge and Conference Center in Oregon.<\/p><\/div>Partners in the early-warning buoy network will do the calibration between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Those include researchers from Bowling Green State University and Ohio State University, as well as water treatment plant operators in the cities of Oregon, Toledo, Elyria, Avon, Sandusky and Lorain. LimnoTech, YSI and Fondriest Environmental are local companies providing technology support.<\/p>\n<p>UT\u2019s water quality and sensor buoy annually rides the waves off the shore of the Maumee Bay State Park Lodge and Conference Center in Oregon. It is part of an early-warning network of buoys throughout the western Lake Erie basin that provides live data vital in the assessment of harmful algal blooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go out on our research vessel at least once a week for sampling throughout the summer, but the buoys are out there all the time,\u201d Bridgeman said. \u201cEven when it\u2019s too rough for boats to be on the lake, the buoys can alert if something is developing or changing quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The buoys are equipped with what is called the YSI EXO sonde, a black and blue instrument composed of several probes to measure various water quality parameters, including how much blue-green algae is present, water temperature, clarity, oxygen levels, turbidity and pH.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one piece of the battle plan to track and combat the growing harmful algal bloom in order to sound the early warning for water treatment plant operators as they work to provide safe public drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are watching very closely and are prepared,\u201d Bridgeman said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, May 15, scientists from the area will come to the Lake Erie Center to make sure they&#8217;re on the same page to monitor water quality this summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":812,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,39,1,7],"tags":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49854"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/812"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=49854"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49854\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":49869,"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49854\/revisions\/49869"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=49854"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=49854"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=49854"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
