{"id":50132,"date":"2018-06-14T03:46:57","date_gmt":"2018-06-14T07:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=50132"},"modified":"2019-02-06T09:47:14","modified_gmt":"2019-02-06T13:47:14","slug":"bee-proactive-ut-students-to-compete-in-biodesign-challenge-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/06_14_2018\/bee-proactive-ut-students-to-compete-in-biodesign-challenge-in-new-york","title":{"rendered":"Bee proactive: UT students to compete in Biodesign Challenge in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team of University of Toledo students is buzzing with excitement, preparing to compete against 29 schools in the Biodesign Challenge Summit in New York this month.<\/p>\n<p>The four students will present \u201cApigiene Hive: Rethinking Bee Hygiene\u201d at the international contest Thursday and Friday, June 21-22, at the Museum of Modern Art.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/06_14_2018\/bee-proactive-ut-students-to-compete-in-biodesign-challenge-in-new-york\/untitled-8\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50185\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Biodesign-Challenge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-50185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Biodesign-Challenge.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Biodesign-Challenge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe decided to focus on bees because of the recent problems with colony collapse disorder,\u201d said Madeline Tomczak, who graduated with a bachelor of science degree in environmental science in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we simply found those tiny yellow-and-black insects adorable,\u201d added Domenic Pennetta, a sophomore majoring in art. \u201cBy focusing on bees and their problems, we could help both bees and apiarists here in Ohio, and also have solutions that could potentially be used to benefit others around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Solving problems creatively is what the Biodesign Challenge is all about. The Genspace NYC program offers college students the chance to envision future applications of biotechnology by working together interdisciplinarily.<\/p>\n<p>At UT, the Biodesign Challenge class in spring semester brought together students majoring in art, bioengineering and environmental science, as well as peers from the Jesup Scott Honors College.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/06_14_2018\/bee-proactive-ut-students-to-compete-in-biodesign-challenge-in-new-york\/bdcmasterlockups-02\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50187\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/bdcMasterLockups-02.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"348\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-50187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/bdcMasterLockups-02.png 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/bdcMasterLockups-02-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe really wonderful part about participating in this challenge is it started with the students \u2014 they approached us about having the class,\u201d Eric Zeigler, associate lecturer in the UT Department of Art, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing we thought was paramount in teaching this class: We were their peers. We were in the trenches with the students, asking questions, learning together,\u201d Brian Carpenter, lecturer and gallery director in the UT Department of Art, said. \u201cIt\u2019s been so inspiring. I tell everyone this is my favorite class I\u2019ve taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter and Zeigler will travel with the team to the Big Apple, where the UT students will vie with teams from across the country, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, France, Guatemala, Japan and Scotland for awards, including the Animal-Free Wool Prize sponsored by PETA, Stella McCartney and Stray Dog Capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese finalists were selected from a pool of 450 participants,\u201d Daniel Grushkin, founder and director of the Biodesign Challenge, said. \u201cI firmly believe that they are leading us into a sustainable future with their visions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomczak and Pennetta worked with Jesse Grumelot, who graduated in May with a bachelor of science degree in bioengineering, and Lucya Keune, a senior studying visual arts, to create additions for the popular Langstroth hive to fight one of the bees\u2019 biggest foes: mites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fibrous brush filled with zebra mussel diatoms will target Varroa destructor mites on the surface of adult bees,\u201d Grumelot said. \u201cIn addition, mint-infused wax frames will eliminate Acarapis woodi mites, as well as Varroa destructor juveniles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/06_14_2018\/bee-proactive-ut-students-to-compete-in-biodesign-challenge-in-new-york\/biodesign-apigiene-hive-poster\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50186\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Biodesign-Apigiene-Hive-poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"819\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-50186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Biodesign-Apigiene-Hive-poster.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Biodesign-Apigiene-Hive-poster-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe researched the problem, talking to specialists and professionals, and focused on natural ways to give bees a better environment to thrive,\u201d Keune said.<\/p>\n<p>Part of that new environment includes placing a brush at the hive entrance to use what beekeepers call the sugar shake \u2014 but in a new way. To encourage bees to be more hygienic, beekeepers sometimes put powder sugar on the insects so they\u2019ll clean off the sweet stuff \u2014 and the nasty Varroa destructor mites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe use powdered zebra mussel to increase hygiene behaviors, which in turn helps kill the mites,\u201d Tomczak said. <\/p>\n<p>The zebra mussel powder acts like diatomaceous earth, which, when crushed, can be used as a treatment for fleas and ticks on household pets. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince diatomaceous earth is often from oceanic rocks, we wanted to bring this part of the hive closer to home by looking at Lake Erie,\u201d Tomczak said. \u201cZebra mussel shells are abundant and easy to collect, and can be ground down to a fine powder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The powder is then baked, sterilized, and made finer with a mortar and pestle. It will prompt the bees to clean up and get rid of the mites, and it will help kill any mites inside the hive. <\/p>\n<p>And to tackle the Acarapis woodi mites, which invade the hive and lay eggs, the team turned to a natural deterrent: mint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to avoid the chemical sprays that can be harmful and stressful to the bee colony,\u201d Keune said. \u201cWe learned mint is used to fight mites; it\u2019s better for the bees and the honey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur new hive features starting frames of beeswax infused with natural corn mint and peppermint,\u201d Grumelot said. \u201cThis method is a more accurate way to focus on the mite infestation, and it avoids spraying the entire hive, leaving the honey untouched and the bees happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In New York, the UT students will present their project to more than 200 scientists, designers, entrepreneurs and artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great resum\u00e9-builder for our students,\u201d Zeigler said. \u201cTheir design is economically feasible; beekeepers would just add two simple modifications to their existing hives. It\u2019s a happy solution, and one that could have tremendous market impact all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis challenge is fantastic. It encourages students to think creatively, take risks, and gather science and data.
