{"id":51161,"date":"2018-09-10T03:18:20","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T07:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=51161"},"modified":"2018-09-11T13:42:46","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T17:42:46","slug":"wanted-banned-books-to-support-right-to-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_10_2018\/wanted-banned-books-to-support-right-to-read","title":{"rendered":"Wanted: Banned books to support right to read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For two decades, The University of Toledo\u2019s Banned Books Vigil has shined a spotlight on the right to read, speak, think and create freely.<\/p>\n<p>That tradition will continue Thursday, Sept. 27, during the daylong vigil in Carlson Library Room 1005. Presentations will be given every half hour, and attendees will have the chance to win banned books, as well as other door prizes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_10_2018\/wanted-banned-books-to-support-right-to-read\/bannedinusa_map\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-51175\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/bannedinusa_map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"348\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-51175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/bannedinusa_map.png 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/bannedinusa_map-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>\u201cBetween 2000 and 2009, the Office for Intellectual Freedom processed 5,099 reports of challenges to books,\u201d Dr. Paulette Kilmer, UT professor of communication and coordinator of the UT Banned Books Coalition, said. \u201cThis number will increase since many complaints are not reported until years after they occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, the American Library Association estimates the media does not cover 85 percent of challenges and bans. That\u2019s why events like the UT Banned Books Vigil are so important. We need to support our First Amendment now more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kilmer noted Harper Lee\u2019s \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d and even the dictionary have been banned or challenged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur fight for intellectual freedom is never over,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Become a \u201cChampion of Freedom of Expression\u201d by donating banned or challenged titles listed on the American Library Association\u2019s website <a href=\"http:\/\/ala.org\/advocacy\/bbooks\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_10_2018\/wanted-banned-books-to-support-right-to-read\/2018-bbks-champions-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-51176\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UT-Banned-Books-Coalition.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"162\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-51176\" \/><\/a>Champions will be recognized by having their names appear in front of the titles they purchase, and their names will appear on a poster at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Donations are requested by 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17. Books may be purchased at the Barnes &#038; Noble University Bookstore. Cash donations also are welcome and will be used to purchase books.
