{"id":51996,"date":"2018-10-30T03:59:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T07:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=51996"},"modified":"2018-10-29T15:54:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T19:54:34","slug":"events-to-spotlight-native-american-heritage-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/10_30_2018\/events-to-spotlight-native-american-heritage-month","title":{"rendered":"Events to spotlight Native American Heritage Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A talk by a modern medicine woman, a chance to make a dream catcher, and a film screening are some of the events that will take place at The University of Toledo in November for Native American Heritage Month. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to host Deborah \u2018Eagle Cloud\u2019 Ayres, who will share her experience as a medicine woman,\u201d said Dr. Michele Soliz, associate vice president for student success and inclusion in the Division of Student Affairs. \u201cOther events this month will celebrate the contributions and cultural richness of Native Americans.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=52008\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-52008\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Native-American-Month-poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"720\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-52008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Native-American-Month-poster.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Native-American-Month-poster-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Ayres will give the keynote address, \u201cIndigenous Healing for Modern Times,\u201d Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. in Thompson Student Union Room 3018. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealing is the inward journey back to your divine self: The body, mind and heart are various paths to your center,\u201d Ayres wrote on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/livesacred.org\/\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She is an expert in Native American spirituality and runs a healing practice in Sylvania, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Listed by date, other events taking place will be:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Monday, Nov. 5 \u2014 Native American Heritage Month Kickoff: Three Sister Soup Tasting, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Thompson Student Union Trimble Lounge. Stop by to sample the soup that is a combination of beans, corn and squash, foods traditionally grown by many Native American tribes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Wednesday, Nov. 7 \u2014 Native American Heritage Month Diversity Dialogue, 5:30 p.m., Thompson Student Union Room 2584. The discussion will focus on issues that affect Native Americans and how these issues are relevant today in multiple marginalized communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Thursday, Nov. 15 \u2014 Create Your Own Dream Catcher, noon to 2 p.m., Thompson Student Union Trimble Lounge. Learn the symbolism of the dream catcher and make your own protective charm.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Wednesday, Nov. 28 \u2014 Film Screening, \u201cReel Injun,\u201d 6 p.m., Memorial Field House Room 1200. The 2009 Canadian documentary explores the portrayal of Native Americans in film.
