The University of Toledo announced today that Head Men\u2019s Basketball Coach Gene Cross has resigned his position effective immediately.<\/p>\n
UT Vice President and Athletic Director Mike O\u2019Brien said that the search for a replacement would begin immediately, and that Assistant Coach Bob Sundvold will serve as acting head coach until a new coach is hired.<\/p>\n
“I appreciate the opportunity to have been the head men’s basketball coach here at UT,\u201d Cross said. \u201c I enjoyed my time trying to change the lives of these young men. It is with mixed emotions that I have chosen to move on at this time to pursue other career opportunities.”<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would like to thank Gene for his efforts on behalf of the men\u2019s basketball program and wish him well in his future endeavors,\u201d O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n
In two seasons at the helm of the Rockets\u2019 program, Cross posted an 11-53 win-loss record. He guided UT to a 7-25 mark and a 5-11 Mid-American Conference ledger in his first season. This past season, Toledo posted a 4-28 record and a 1-15 league mark.<\/p>\n
Prior to coming to Toledo, Cross served as an assistant coach for 12 years at four different institutions. He began his collegiate coaching career at Illinois-Chicago (1996-02), followed by stops at DePaul (2002-05), Virginia (2005-06) and Notre Dame (2006-08).<\/p>\n
Cross played college basketball at the University of Illinois. He earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in history from Illinois in 1994 and received a master\u2019s degree in sports management at Ohio State University in 1996.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
