{"id":54520,"date":"2019-04-09T03:44:37","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T07:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=54520"},"modified":"2019-04-08T14:30:03","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T18:30:03","slug":"utoledo-physicist-awarded-1-1-million-to-boost-performance-of-solar-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_09_2019\/utoledo-physicist-awarded-1-1-million-to-boost-performance-of-solar-cells","title":{"rendered":"UToledo physicist awarded $1.1 million to boost performance of solar cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A physicist at The University of Toledo was awarded a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop ultra-high efficiency solar cells that accelerate the conversion of the sun\u2019s energy into electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Yanfa Yan, professor of physics, is teaming up with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on the photovoltaics project to create what are referred to as all-perovskite tandem solar cells that would have a higher conversion efficiency and lower cost. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_54591\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=54591\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54591\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54591\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Yan-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"504\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Yan-web.jpg 432w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Yan-web-257x300.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yan<\/p><\/div>While the majority of solar panels based on polycrystalline absorber materials on the market today have about a 16 percent efficiency rating, Yan\u2019s goal is to raise the bar by creating a cell with more than 25 percent efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about this opportunity and eager to collaborate with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to push the performance of solar cells to a higher level and make contributions to the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s clean energy goal,\u201d Yan said. <\/p>\n<p>Yan\u2019s work is one of 25 projects recently awarded a total of $28 million in federal funding by the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Solar Energy Technologies Office, which supports early-stage research and development to improve the affordability, reliability and performance of solar technologies on the grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis $1.1 million award recognizes The University of Toledo as a national leader in photovoltaics research,\u201d Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur said. \u201cThis is part of an effort to innovate toward a cleaner energy future. With First Solar\u2019s footprint in northwest Ohio and the Wright Center for Photovoltaics Innovation and Commercialization at The University of Toledo, Toledo is a hotbed for clean energy and photovoltaics research.
