{"id":56120,"date":"2019-08-16T09:39:14","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T13:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=56120"},"modified":"2019-08-16T10:37:48","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T14:37:48","slug":"utoledo-theatre-professors-work-plays-in-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/08_16_2019\/utoledo-theatre-professors-work-plays-in-chicago","title":{"rendered":"UToledo Theatre Assistant Professor&#8217;s Work Plays in Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque\u2019s classic novel, \u201cAll Quiet on the Western Front,\u201d by Matt Foss, UToledo assistant professor of theatre, will receive its professional premiere in Chicago Friday, Aug. 16.  <\/p>\n<p>It will open the season of Red Tape Theatre and is a co-production between Red Tape, the Greenhouse Theatre Center, and The University of Toledo, and run through Saturday, Sept. 14.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/08_16_2019\/utoledo-theatre-professors-work-plays-in-chicago\/allquiet_11x17\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-56121\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/allQuiet_11x17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"835\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-56121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/allQuiet_11x17.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/allQuiet_11x17-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>The production represents a unique collaboration between a public university and professional theatre, allowing a showcasing of work incubated in Toledo to be shared with a larger audience.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Chicago-based professional actors and designers, Stephen Sakowski, UToledo assistant professor, is serving as the production\u2019s lighting designer, and recent UToledo graduates Austin Rambo and Bianca Caniglia round out the acting ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>The story is centered on the experiences of 2nd Company on the German Front lines during the last year of World War I as they navigate the vicious cycle of tedium, boredom behind the lines, and constant terror when installed in the trenches at the font. The adaptation closely follows the events of the novel, as the central storyteller, Paul, speaks to the loss of friends, the deepening of human connections, and the growing realization of what is true and what is not in the face of war. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt speaks to the cycles of history from which we are charged to learn, and our approach to the play seeks to gather the threads of this cycle \u2014 from the time of Remarque\u2019s writing and to our immediate present,\u201d Foss said.<\/p>\n<p>The play was created with permission and in association with the Remarque estate and was initially produced at The University of Toledo on the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI last November. It featured a set design by student Kevin Upham, sound by student Ryan Peters-Hieber, and costumes by Lecturer Kelly McBane.<\/p>\n<p>Red Tape Theatre is a free venue committed to the creation of new and experimental work through collaborations with ensembles, playwrights, musicians, dancers and visual artists.<br \/>\nAll tickets are free to every performance and can be reserved through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redtapetheatre.org\">Red Tape Theatre website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Foss is no stranger to the Chicago theatre scene.
