{"id":57808,"date":"2020-01-13T09:54:36","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T13:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=57808"},"modified":"2020-01-13T11:01:44","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T15:01:44","slug":"utoledo-to-spotlight-sustainable-energy-program-that-repurposes-nuclear-reactors-for-hydrogen-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_13_2020\/utoledo-to-spotlight-sustainable-energy-program-that-repurposes-nuclear-reactors-for-hydrogen-production","title":{"rendered":"UToledo to Spotlight Sustainable Energy Program That Repurposes Nuclear Reactors for Hydrogen Production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo College of Engineering is hosting a workshop to showcase a national program designed to use the country\u2019s commercial nuclear reactors to produce hydrogen and help the transportation, chemical and steel industries close the carbon cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The event, focused on the sustainable energy program, will start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Nitschke Hall Room 1027, and bring together representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, scientists from U.S. national laboratories, UToledo faculty, representatives from Davis-Besse nuclear power plant, and industry leaders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_13_2020\/utoledo-to-spotlight-sustainable-energy-program-that-repurposes-nuclear-reactors-for-hydrogen-production\/jan-14-energy-workshop-flyer\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57809\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Jan-14-Energy-Workshop-Flyer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"699\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-57809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Jan-14-Energy-Workshop-Flyer.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Jan-14-Energy-Workshop-Flyer-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>As part of the national project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho National Laboratory is working with the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station on a pilot program to install an electrolysis system to produce hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Toledo is proud to host a workshop to explore opportunities in repurposing light water nuclear reactors for hydrogen production through a hybrid systems design,\u201d said Dr. Mike Toole, dean of the UToledo College of Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project is a win for regional industries and clean energy,\u201d Dr. Connie Schall, UToledo associate vice president for research, said. \u201cNuclear electricity is a low carbon emission power source.
