{"id":59114,"date":"2020-06-16T03:02:37","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T07:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=59114"},"modified":"2020-06-03T09:32:49","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T13:32:49","slug":"utoledos-american-language-institute-highlighted-by-pearson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/06_16_2020\/utoledos-american-language-institute-highlighted-by-pearson","title":{"rendered":"UToledo&#8217;s American Language Institute Highlighted by Pearson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo American Language Institute (ALI) is taking language learning online. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ting Li, curriculum coordinator for the institute, was interviewed by Pearson, highlighting ALI\u2019s transition to online services for its English as a Second Language (ELS) classes. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_59115\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?attachment_id=59115\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-59115\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59115\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Li.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"338\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Li.jpg 252w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Li-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-59115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Li<\/p><\/div>The piece titled \u201cEducator Story: Moving ESL Courses Online to Keep Learning Moving Forward\u201d highlighted The University of Toledo\u2019s intensive English Language Learning Program, which helps non-native speakers of English achieve success both academically and professionally. <\/p>\n<p>In fall 2016, ALI standardized its curriculum in alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference and Global Scale of English, which is the guiding framework for Pearson\u2019s ESL textbook series, \u201cNorthStar and Focus on Grammar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although other intensive English programs have been using Pearson products, according to Pearson, ALI is leading the way in systematically aligning ESL students\u2019 learning objectives and the program\u2019s progressive level structure with teaching materials, assessment methods, and virtual learning tools. In 2018, Pearson invited ALI to collaborate in a case study to highlight best practices in using Pearson products. <\/p>\n<p>Some of the article\u2019s key recommendations, drawn from Li\u2019s work, were: <\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Get the entire faculty together to complete intensive online training both in person (if possible) and virtually.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Create a supportive and collaborative work environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Have a leader that trusts fully in the faculty\u2019s abilities as this breeds confidence and a willingness to ask for assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Offer consistent online structure and links to avoid confusion for students.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Be adaptable to the modern technological age and see it as an opportunity to engage students and reduce administrative burden.<\/p>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearsoned.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Educator-Story-Transitioning-Online-ALI-005.pdf\"><strong>Pearson article<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so proud of the strides ALI has made,\u201d said Sara Clark, director of the Center for International Studies and Programs. \u201cSharing their best practice with others institutions will help them to focus their efforts in serving their students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pearson is the world\u2019s learning company with more than 22,500 employees operating in 70 countries.
