Paige Chapman pictured it: She would wear a sky blue off-the-shoulder dress with a rose-gold necklace and matching earrings, and sparkly gold heels.<\/p>\n

She would walk on stage of the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall and sing \u201cTornami a Vagheggiar,\u201d a love song from Handel\u2019s \u201cAlcina.\u201d<\/p>\n

That song will still open her senior recital, but the performance will be a video online.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t totally get all glammed up. I won\u2019t pull out the \u2018Cinderella\u2019 blue gown that is so pretty,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I\u2019ll still look nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

And even though the soprano will record that video in the basement of her Troy, Mich., home, it\u2019ll be a soaring performance.<\/p>\n

Chapman\u2019s singing career has continued its upward trajectory since she became a Rocket in the College of Arts and Letters.<\/p>\n

The ing\u00e9nue has played six leading roles in UToledo operas and one supporting role in a musical. She took top honors in the Concerto\/Aria Competition Collegiate Division in fall 2019, and she participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition, placing third in fall 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cPaige is a highly talented performer and singer. She has purity, agility and depth in her tone that make her voice adaptable to many different styles ranging from classical to musical theater,\u201d Dr. Emily K. Oehrtman, UToledo visiting assistant professor of music, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is a genuine and generous performer, portraying a wide variety of characters adeptly, expressing poetry through song with ease, and showcasing different styles of music with grace and accuracy,\u201d Oehrtman said.<\/p>\n

Chapman recalled her first opera role at the University \u2014 Natalie in Franz Leh\u00e1r\u2019s \u201cThe Merry Widower.\u201d \u201cI definitely learned a lot in that production. I was cast with someone older and more experienced. It was interesting to see the differences and similarities in how we performed the role.\u201d<\/p>\n

She had fun playing the title role in UToledo\u2019s presentation of Seymour Barab\u2019s \u201cLittle Red Riding Hood.\u201d Another of her favorite roles on the University stage was in \u201cA Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream,\u201d an opera with music by Benjamin Britten and libretto adapted by Peter Pears from Shakespeare\u2019s classic comedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played Titania, queen of the fairies,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cI wore these ginormous wings \u2014 it was hard to walk in the hallway! It was an amazing costume to go along with amazing music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chapman<\/p><\/div>\n

She reached new heights as Despina in UToledo Opera\u2019s production of Mozart\u2019s \u201cCos\u00ec Fan Tutte.\u201d \u201cThis was the most challenging role. The entire opera is in Italian, and I had to master recitative \u2014 speaking that moves the story along. It was a very new skill to learn; it is music written with rhythms more speech-like with limited accompaniment,\u201d Chapman said.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t always about opera.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love music. I remember singing at Sunday school, and everyone told my parents [Steve and Annette Chapman] they should put me in voice lessons,\u201d Chapman remembered.<\/p>\n

When she turned 5, Chapman asked for voice lessons and a karaoke machine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first song I learned in voice lessons was \u2018The Beauty and the Beast,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

At age 11, she saw her first opera: Puccini\u2019s \u201cLa Boh\u00e8me\u201d at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan\u2019s Manistee National Forest.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpera did not resonate with me right away,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cIt definitely was something I fell in love with later \u2014 like a switch flipped.\u201d<\/p>\n

And once it was on, it was really on.<\/p>\n

After she receives a bachelor of music in performance May 9 at UToledo\u2019s virtual commencement ceremony, Chapman will pursue a master\u2019s degree in music performance at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she has a full ride and graduate assistantship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to perform a little \u2014 a young artist program, an opera company,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cThe goal is to keep music in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she ascends, she\u2019ll take UToledo with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned so much; I don\u2019t think I can ask anything better as a student and person,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cThere is such a tremendous sense of community here. I have made friendships and faculty relationships that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
