And a \u201cFairy Circle\u201d enchants all who enter UT Medical Center by Mulford Library on Health Science Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The pieces are two of the 10 new works installed for the fifth annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. In addition, a few favorites have been purchased or retained.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 100 artists submitted entries for consideration to the Midwest Sculpture Initiative. The UT Campus Beautification Committee reviewed the submissions and selected the pieces on display.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want people to be visually entertained by the works,\u201d said Tom Lingeman, professor of art and member of the Campus Beautification Committee, who chaired the selection committee. \u201cFrom an educational point of view, I want students to come away with an understanding of how sculpture enhances the environment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we tried to do \u2014 enhance the physical environment,\u201d he said of Campus Beautification Committee and selection committee members Richard Eastop, former UT administrator; Dan Klett, director of facilities planning; Joel Lipman, professor of English; and Dr. Celia Regimbal, associate professor of early childhood, physical and special education.<\/p>\n<p>New works on Centennial Mall are \u201cPuzzler\u201d by Calvin Babich, \u201cHarp\u201d by Michael Sohikian and \u201cDancer\u201d by James Havens. Staying in the mall will be \u201cDarters\u201d by Tom Rudd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViking Totems\u201d by Ric Leichliter is located between University and Gillham halls, and \u201cFlutter Archway III\u201d by Jim Gallucci is on the hilltop between Libbey and University halls.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Steven LeBlanc, associate dean in the College of Engineering and chair of the Campus Beautification Committee, said a piece from last year\u2019s exhibit, \u201cBalancing Act\u201d by Calvin Babich, was purchased by an anonymous donor in honor of the 100th anniversary of the College of Arts and Sciences and was moved to the east side of University Hall.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6266\" style=\"width: 478px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fairy-circle-and-markchatterley-photoby-curt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6266\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fairy-circle-and-markchatterley-photoby-curt.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Chatterley posed for a photo by his sculpture, \u201cFairy Circle,\u201d after installing it on Health Science Campus.\" title=\"fairy-circle-and-markchatterley-photoby-curt\" width=\"468\" height=\"326\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fairy-circle-and-markchatterley-photoby-curt.jpg 468w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fairy-circle-and-markchatterley-photoby-curt-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Chatterley posed for a photo by his sculpture, \u201cFairy Circle,\u201d after installing it on Health Science Campus.<\/p><\/div>\u201cStanding Thinker\u201d by James Havens also will remain near the Snyder Memorial Building thanks to an anonymous donor, LeBlanc added.<\/p>\n<p>Other new pieces on Main Campus are Dave Vande Vusse\u2019s  \u201cSun Over the Red Sea,\u201d which is located near Ottawa East and the University\/Parks Trail; Ken Thompson\u2019s \u201cWestern Trilogy Revisited,\u201d which sits near the Driscoll Alumni Center; and Ray Katz\u2019s \u201cConstruction,\u201d which is near the main entrance to Nitshcke Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The two new works placed on Health Science Campus are Mark Chatterley\u2019s \u201cFairy Circle,\u201d which is located near the entrance to UT Medical Center by Mulford Library, and Austin Collins\u2019 \u201cTemple VI,\u201d which sits on the south side of the Health Education Building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope when people look at the work that they realize the arts are very important at The University of Toledo,\u201d Lingeman said. \u201cAnd even though the Department of Art is located on the Toledo Museum of Art Campus, its effect reaches all campuses and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe motto of the Campus Beautification Committee is \u2018The beauty of the campus is our gift to the future.\u2019 We hope that the entire UT community will enjoy the beauty of these sculptures that we have brought to the campus,\u201d LeBlanc said.<\/p>\n<p>All artists received a $250 stipend for their artwork, which will remain in their current locations for the next year.
