{"id":63044,"date":"2020-12-09T03:00:38","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T07:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=63044"},"modified":"2020-12-10T09:41:19","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T13:41:19","slug":"newest-utoledo-astronomer-advancing-discoveries-amidst-coronavirus-upheaval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/12_09_2020\/newest-utoledo-astronomer-advancing-discoveries-amidst-coronavirus-upheaval","title":{"rendered":"Newest UToledo Astronomer Advancing Discoveries Amidst Coronavirus Upheaval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the coming decade, a new window into the first billion years of the universe will be opened when more powerful instruments are deployed including the James Webb Space Telescope and Earth\u2019s first 30-meter-class ground-based telescopes.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Eli Visbal, assistant professor of astronomy at The University of Toledo, and his research group are working to develop the theoretical models necessary to guide and interpret these observations.<\/p>\n<p>The National Science Foundation awarded Visbal a $227,367 grant to develop a new theoretical framework to predict when and where the first stars formed throughout the very early universe.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63046\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Eli-Visbal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63046\" class=\"wp-image-63046\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Eli-Visbal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Eli-Visbal.jpg 5472w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Eli-Visbal-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Eli-Visbal-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-63046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assistant professor of astronomy at The University of Toledo, Dr. Eli Visbal makes theoretical predictions with paper-and-pencil calculations and numerical simulations run on supercomputers.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, Visbal also published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1146\/annurev-astro-120419-014455\">article<\/a> titled \u201cThe Assembly of the First Massive Black Holes\u201d in the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnual Review articles summarize an entire field and are typically written by leaders in that field,\u201d said Dr. Michael Cushing, professor of physics and astronomy and director of UToledo Ritter Planetarium. \u201cThat Dr. Visbal was an author on one of these articles speaks to his exceptionalism as a scientist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Visbal is a theoretical astrophysicist, not an observer. He makes theoretical predictions with both paper-and-pencil calculations and numerical simulations run on supercomputers that can be used to interpret observational data.<\/p>\n<p>Key questions Visbal\u2019s research group seeks to answer include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 What were the properties of the first stars and galaxies?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022. How did the first supermassive black holes form?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 How did the first galaxies impact the intergalactic gas surrounding them?\u200b<\/p>\n<p>The universe is 14 billion years old, and Visbal\u2019s work focuses on understanding the transition from simplicity to complexity in its first billion years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObservations indicate that the universe shortly after the Big Bang was exceedingly simple,\u201d Visbal said. \u201cIt consisted of a nearly uniform expanding medium of neutral gas, dark matter and radiation.\u00a0In contrast, things were much more complicated only a billion years later. We observe that galaxies comprised of huge numbers of stars have formed by this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visbal was born and raised in Ohio just outside of Dayton. He earned his Ph.D. in physics at Harvard University and his bachelor\u2019s degree in physics at Carnegie Mellon University.
