A professor at Colorado State University, Dr. D-L Stewart is known for their Black Trans* Lives Matter TED Talks, \u201cScenes from a Black Trans Life.\u201d\u00a0In their upcoming lecture, Stewart will discuss what Time magazine declared to be the “transgender tipping point” in 2014, as the national publication featured actress, model and activist Laverne Cox on its cover. This did mark a sea change in the visibility of trans women onscreen and in the news; however, not everything changed. What has visibility brought us?<\/p>\n
\u201cVisibility is important for so many reasons and it\u2019s not enough by itself,\u201d said Danielle Lutman
\nprogram manager for Gender Equity Student Initiatives, Catharine S. Eberly. \u201cVisibility must be used to energize and mobilize us against oppression and towards social change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bridge Parham, a graduate student in the College of Health and Human Services, added that, \u201cwhile visibility can increase awareness, awareness itself is not enough to improve the lives of trans people.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs trans activist\u00a0Miss Major Griffin Gracy says, \u2018I really don’t understand why we need a day of visibility, since for many of us, especially black girls, we are as visible as we need to be. Our visibility is getting us killed! The people who care about us and are in our lives, THEY are the people who need to become more visible. They need to acknowledge that we exist, claim and show that they support us, and the best way to do that is talk about us in a positive light on our day of visibility.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThere must be an overall cultural shift\u00a0and a\u00a0never-ending\u00a0decree\u00a0from both the\u00a0mouths of trans and\u00a0non-trans\u00a0people alike,\u201d Parham said, \u201cthat we deserve to live our lives in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
