Perhaps more than at any other moment in our lifetime, we rallied as a community around those who lost friends and family members due to the pandemic,\u201d Postel said in the video speech released Monday, May 3.<\/p>\n<p>During his introduction to the Annual Report component of the President\u2019s speech, Faculty Senate President Terry Bigioni also recognized faculty, staff and students for their commitment to the health and safety of one another. \u201cI would like to say how proud we all are of our students, who seemed to immediately recognize what was at stake, what we all had to lose.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/offices\/president\/state-of-the-university\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-66390\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/SOU-221-Graphic-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/SOU-221-Graphic-copy.jpg 673w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/SOU-221-Graphic-copy-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWhile other schools were having outbreaks and closures, our campus positivity rates were consistently well below local community levels. By that measure, one might even say that it was safer to be on campus than off campus. Truly amazing. Faculty and staff may have reopened our University, but it was our amazing students who kept it open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alfred Baker, UToledo alumnus and chair of the UToledo Board of Trustees, thanked Postel for his leadership. \u201cWe are confident that President Postel is the right leader, at the right time for our University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Postel\u2019s address highlighted the personal stories of perseverance of Jacob Connolly, UToledo\u2019s recent Goldwater Scholar; Leah Williams, transplant survivor and soon-to-be Rocket graduate; and Pierre Maldonado, 2010 UToledo graduate and University of Toledo Medical Center nurse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64854\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Headshot-8508-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64854\" class=\"wp-image-64854\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Headshot-8508-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Headshot-8508-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Headshot-8508-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Headshot-8508-1.jpg 912w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-64854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Postel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He also recognized the UToledo Black Theatre Ensemble, faculty and students in the Departments of Theatre and Film and Communication for their innovation and collaboration knitting together the production\u2019s components shot independently according to social distance guidelines into the final \u201c20K Leagues Under the Sea\u201d performance that was nothing short of breathtaking.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting Winston Churchill, Postel emphasized that addressing the challenges of 2020 has proven that the higher education and healthcare industries are far more agile than previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have faced financial uncertainty head on as we create a solid foundation to build future growth together. We\u2019ve made huge strides toward financial stability of our hospital.
