Coreion \u201cCorey\u201d Watts knew he wanted to major in a health profession.<\/p>\n

And it didn\u2019t take long for the fourth-year respiratory care student from Columbus to decide that he wanted to work in healthcare, a stable field where he would always have career opportunities.<\/p>\n

Narrowing down where to pursue his degree, however, was a decision that took a bit longer.<\/p>\n

Corey Watts, a fourth-year respiratory care student from Columbus, is sharing his experience in choosing a career and where to pursue his degree in a new UToledo television commercial airing this month throughout Ohio.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cI knew I didn\u2019t want to go to Ohio State,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d kind of grown up around that and wasn\u2019t interested. But I did think about Toledo early because a friend was going there for nursing.\u201d<\/p>\n

A high school athlete, Corey also had a scholarship offer to attend a smaller private college to run track.<\/p>\n

\u201cInitially, I was only track-minded because that was something I really wanted to do. I wasn\u2019t thinking long term,\u201d Watts said. \u201cBut they didn\u2019t have the stuff I wanted to do. They didn\u2019t have much as far as science or medical classes \u2014 not even in graduate programs.\u201d<\/p>\n

UToledo\u2019s breadth of health profession programs and its reputation for clinical education were key decision factors as he contemplated his future.<\/p>\n

Now Watts is sharing his experience as the newest face of UToledo\u2019s television commercial series. The spot begins running this month throughout Ohio as well as on streaming channels and YouTube, presenting a quick peek at his college decision process.<\/p>\n

\u201cFilming the commercial was fun and different. I really understand now why it takes so long to make movies,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have to set up and get the right angle and everything. It felt like it took 100 shots just to get one thing right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watts began his clinicals this fall and will participate in the University\u2019s interprofessional education program at the simulation center on Health Science Campus.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cCorey is an extremely dedicated student,\u201d said Dr. Nicole McKenzie, UToledo\u2019s Respiratory Care program director and assistant professor. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to make an excellent respiratory therapist because he is so personable and passionate about helping people. His bedside manner will quickly make him a favorite among staff and patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watts is excited about putting his course lessons into real-world practice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to applying my knowledge and what I learned over the summer into the actual clinicals,\u201d Watts said. \u201cIf I\u2019d have gone somewhere else, I wouldn\u2019t have had the chance to do something like this. It feels like the start of my career. It\u2019s like I\u2019m a step closer to what I\u2019m actually going to be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

McKenzie added that Watts is a student role model for the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love having Corey in our courses because he is always friendly and eager to learn,\u201d she said. \u201cFuture Rockets should learn from Corey \u2013 approach your coursework with a positive attitude and stay dedicated to your goals.\u201d<\/p>\n
