{"id":69418,"date":"2021-10-26T03:20:17","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T07:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=69418"},"modified":"2021-10-27T08:17:58","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T12:17:58","slug":"utoledo-to-host-dialogue-on-diversity-to-discuss-critical-race-theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/10_26_2021\/utoledo-to-host-dialogue-on-diversity-to-discuss-critical-race-theory","title":{"rendered":"UToledo to Host Dialogue on Diversity to Discuss Critical Race Theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo is continuing its Dialogues on Diversity series with a conversation about critical race theory.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual event, which is the 17th in the series, is titled \u201cCritical Race Theory, Explained\u201d and will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, on <a href=\"https:\/\/utoledo.webex.com\/webappng\/sites\/utoledo\/meeting\/info\/1f831ee8a1e84f978c3c959b5dd38bc3?siteurl=utoledo&amp;MTID=mbbb78266352b7992ac00d5d9a017358f\">Webex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DI-33-Dialogues-on-Diversity-INSTA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-69234\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DI-33-Dialogues-on-Diversity-INSTA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DI-33-Dialogues-on-Diversity-INSTA.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DI-33-Dialogues-on-Diversity-INSTA-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DI-33-Dialogues-on-Diversity-INSTA-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/DI-33-Dialogues-on-Diversity-INSTA-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>The discussion will explore critical race theory as an academic theory to explain practices that disadvantage some while rewarding others.<\/p>\n<p>Panelists include Dr. Monita Mungo, assistant professor of sociology, and Aaron Baker, doctoral candidate in educational psychology and co-chair of the Judith Herb College of Education Diversity Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExisting for decades, critical race theory has found renewed popularity in current social discourse,\u201d Mungo said. \u201cExperts from sociology, education and political science will explain what critical race theory is and how it is useful as a framework to examine the social production of unequal and unjust outcomes for racialized groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discussion will be moderated by Quatez Scott, dean\u2019s fellow in the College of Graduate Studies and Ph.D. student in the Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education program.<\/p>\n<p>The UToledo Office of Diversity and Inclusion organized the event.<\/p>\n<p>UToledo launched the Dialogues on Diversity series in 2020 after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis by a police officer, sparking protests nationwide against systemic racism.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Toledo is a community that celebrates and respects people of all backgrounds and experiences.
