{"id":69589,"date":"2021-11-01T10:04:28","date_gmt":"2021-11-01T14:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=69589"},"modified":"2021-11-01T10:04:28","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T14:04:28","slug":"utoledo-celebrates-native-american-heritage-month-in-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_01_2021\/utoledo-celebrates-native-american-heritage-month-in-november","title":{"rendered":"UToledo Celebrates Native American Heritage Month in November"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, The University of Toledo will celebrate the history, culture and accomplishments of Indigenous peoples throughout November.<\/p>\n<p>The University recently updated its\u00a0Land Acknowledgement Statement, which is a formal statement that recognizes Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous peoples and their traditional territories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Toledo acknowledges that the region of Ohio in which the University sits is the ancestral homelands of the\u00a0Seneca,\u00a0Erie\u00a0and\u00a0Odawa, as well as places of trade for Indigenous peoples, including the Anishinaabe (Ojibwa,\u00a0Pottawatomi), Kilatika, Lenape, Kaskaskia, Kickapoo, Miami, Munsee, Peoria, Piankashaw, Shawnee, Wea and\u00a0Wyandot,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a steward of public lands, it is our responsibility to understand the history of the land, the peoples who came before us and their continuing ties to this place.
