The series will focus on Toledo\u2019s role in fostering the development of both industrial glass and art glass. The series is grouped into three themes: \u00a0The Roots of Toledo Glass, Toledo Glass Innovation, and Toledo Glass and American Aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, April 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Libbey House, 2008 Scottwood Ave., Floyd, author of \u201cThe Glass City: Toledo and the Industry That Made It,\u201d will present her lecture titled \u201cMichael Owens and the Automatic Bottle Machine: 1900 to 1940.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lecture will examine the machine that Owens invented and patented in 1904 to automatically make glass bottles, which completely revolutionized the industry,\u201d Floyd said.\u00a0\u201cAmong other advances credited to the machine is the ending of child labor in glass bottle manufacturing, which was one of the largest employers of children in America prior to the machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Floyd also will present her lecture titled &#8220;Toledo Glass and Innovation that Changed the World\u201d in September, which \u201cwill examine the various inventions and new methods for glass production developed by the Toledo glass industry,\u201d she said, \u201csuch as the bottle machine, a new method for making flat glass, architectural glass and Fiberglas.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71948\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Frank-Calzonetti.-STORY.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71948\" class=\"wp-image-71948 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Frank-Calzonetti.-STORY-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Frank-Calzonetti.-STORY-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Frank-Calzonetti.-STORY-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Frank-Calzonetti.-STORY.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-71948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calzonetti<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also in the fall, Calzonetti will present his lecture titled \u201cSolar Energy:\u00a0 Toledo\u2019s Contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding upon knowledge gained in the glass industry, Toledo entrepreneurs along with University of Toledo faculty and students helped to create a new industry in Toledo in solar energy that is emerging as one of the major centers for this rapidly expanding industry,\u201d he said. \u201cMy lecture will trace the development of this work highlighting the important role that a university plays in building new technology-based industry clusters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cost of the lectures is $10 each, which includes a wine and cheese reception.
