{"id":72021,"date":"2022-03-09T04:00:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-09T08:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=72021"},"modified":"2022-03-10T09:03:28","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T13:03:28","slug":"utoledo-researcher-studying-cell-division-receives-nsf-career-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_09_2022\/utoledo-researcher-studying-cell-division-receives-nsf-career-award","title":{"rendered":"UToledo Researcher Studying Cell Division Receives NSF Career Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have long known that a brief burst of electric current pulses through animal embryonic cells just before they split from one cell to two.<\/p>\n<p>However, further research into the phenomenon hit a dead end, stumping biologists searching for answers about how our cells can divide so reliably with such precise timing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72023\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chen-Lab-MAIN.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72023\" class=\"wp-image-72023\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chen-Lab-MAIN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chen-Lab-MAIN.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chen-Lab-MAIN-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-72023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An assistant professor of biological sciences at UToledo, Dr. Qian Chen recently received a five-year, $700,000 grant from the National Science Foundation\u2019s Faculty Early Career Development Program for his research project.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen the cell divides from one to two, there is this current of calcium ions through the whole cell,\u201d said Dr. Qian Chen, assistant professor of biological sciences at The University of Toledo. \u201cIt\u2019s almost like someone turned on a switch, allowing the cell to divide. But how the current is generated and why a cell needs that current to accompany its division has been an enduring mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientific advances from UToledo may help provide those answers.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper published in 2021, Chen\u2019s lab was the first to observe a nearly identical cell division process in fission yeast, a tiny organism that has been used to study a range of other basic molecular processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur discovery provides us an ideal model to address these fundamental questions,\u201d Chen said. \u201cYeast is cheap to grow in the laboratory, easy to manipulate genetically and have many of the same genes as human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through genetic engineering and high-resolution microscopy, Chen aims to determine what contributes to the current of calcium ions and watch in real time what\u2019s happening inside the cells at a molecular level.<\/p>\n<p>The project recently received a five-year, $700,000 grant from the National Science Foundation\u2019s Faculty Early Career Development Program.<\/p>\n<p>The most prestigious NSF award for early-career scientists, the CAREER program supports promising faculty who have the potential to serve as role models in research and education while making important scientific advancements.<\/p>\n<p>Of the approximately 5,000 genes present in yeast, Chen and his collaborators have identified a dozen for further study. Chen and his team also will study what happens to cell division when they intentionally disrupt that calcium messaging.<\/p>\n<p>While the primary goal of Chen\u2019s research is to provide a fuller understanding of a basic but essential biological process, their discoveries could inform future clinical approaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to understand cell division both as a natural phenomenon and from the human disease perspective,\u201d he said. \u201cAs humans develop, most of our cells lose the ability to divide. They\u2019ve been going through division until it\u2019s no longer necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One key driver of cancer, however, is that cells have regained the ability to divide. As those cancer cells divide and proliferate, they can spread out through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, colonizing regions far away from the initial tumor.<\/p>\n<p>On the inverse, when cells can\u2019t divide, our body may be unable to fully recover from injury.
