The University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film will present the Tony Award-winning musical, \u201cThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,\u201d April 7-10, 15-16 and 22-24 at the UToledo Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre.<\/p>\n

For the first time since 2020, audiences will be at full capacity and student actors will perform without masks.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor our first play back, this big-hearted musical comedy is a really special piece for both our students and audiences,\u201d said Dr. Matt Foss, associate professor of theatre and film and director of the musical. \u201cIt features an ensemble of misfit kids trying to belong in a world that doesn\u2019t always see value in their imaginations or idiosyncrasies \u2014 especially their ability to spell incredibly difficult words.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musical features audience \u201cspellers\u201d who come on stage and compete for the chance to be the Putnam County Spelling Bee Champ. Audience members are encouraged to sign up in the lobby before each show.<\/p>\n

The original 2005 Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards and won two for Best Book of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. The original 2005 off-Broadway production won two Theatre World Awards and was nominated for four Lucille Lortel Awards and won two of them for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Featured Actor; and won three Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Ensemble Performance and Outstanding Director of a Musical.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis musical is a fun and light way to say goodbye to a couple of tough years,\u201d said Dr. Edmund Lingan, acting chair of the UToledo Department of Theatre and Film. \u201cI know everyone will enjoy it. It\u2019s a lot of laughs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur musicals typically have lighter houses early in the run and we end up turning folks away in the later weekends of the run, so we encourage those interested in the show to book tickets early,\u201d Foss said.<\/p>\n

Tickets cost $15-$25 and are available immediately prior to the performance or online in advance at the Tix sales website<\/a>.<\/p>\n
