{"id":73097,"date":"2022-04-26T03:30:37","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T07:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=73097"},"modified":"2022-04-27T08:49:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T12:49:35","slug":"education-graduate-relishes-the-importance-of-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_26_2022\/education-graduate-relishes-the-importance-of-teaching","title":{"rendered":"Education Graduate Relishes the Importance of Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of high school, Max Venia was second-guessing his initial plan to go to college to become a veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p>The tough decision to change his career path led him directly to The University of Toledo, where Venia determined that he could create the most impact as a future educator \u2014 just like his mother, a kindergarten teacher.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58894\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Graduation-Cap_blue-500x500-e1586882554282.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58894\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58894\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Graduation-Cap_blue-500x500-e1586882554282.png\" alt=\"Graduation Cap\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-58894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>CELEBRATING SUCCESS:<\/strong> UToledo recognizes the Class of 2022 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/commencement\/\">spring commencement<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn my career tech class in high school, we completed a senior project and my teacher recommended that I take animals we had for our program into nearby elementary schools,\u201d Venia said. \u201cI fell in love with teaching right there. It was through my love of animals that I discovered my passion for teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four years later, Venia will graduate this May with a bachelor\u2019s degree in early childhood education from UToledo\u2019s Judith Herb College of Education.<\/p>\n<p>During his time as a Rocket, he completed four student teaching experiences in the Toledo area \u2014 including three within Toledo Public Schools. Now wrapping up his final student teaching placement in a third-grade classroom at Larchmont Elementary, Venia is experiencing firsthand what it is like to have his own classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Education students in their final semester manage the classroom completely on their own including teaching lessons and staying on a schedule \u2014 all with oversight from the cooperating teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent teaching has been a big change because I am there five days a week and only have class one night a week,\u201d Venia said. \u201cComing in as the student teacher, it\u2019s not your classroom so you have to go off what your cooperating teacher put in place. You have to figure out where you fit into the classroom, help the students get used to your teaching style and manage their behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rhonda Aguiton, assistant lecturer in the Judith Herb College of Education, described Venia with three words \u2014 passion, drive and fireball.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_73098\" style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Max-Venia-STORY.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73098\" class=\"wp-image-73098 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Max-Venia-STORY.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Max-Venia-STORY.jpg 427w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Max-Venia-STORY-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-73098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Venia, an early childhood education major, is wrapping up his final student teaching placement in a third-grade classroom at Larchmont Elementary.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt has been truly an honor to see Max\u2019s growth over the past three years,\u201d Aguiton said. \u201cHe has evolved into an advocate for all students and who is ambitious to fight for all of his students, no matter who they are, what they look like or what they\u2019re going through in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Max is going to impact many students\u2019 lives and do great things in the field of education. He is going to be a force in making change and a difference in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside of student teaching, Venia is a member of numerous honor societies and Epsilon Alpha Phi \u2014 a co-ed education fraternity \u2014 where he is the current president. He also has been a guest speaker at numerous events for the college, which is an opportunity that undergraduate students rarely experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve gotten better at being professional in handling multiple situations at once,\u201d Venia said. \u201cAs president of Epsilon Alpha Phi, a lot was thrown at me and I was in charge of everything.
