The National Youth Sports Program has returned to The University of Toledo, continuing a summer tradition now in its 52nd year.<\/p>\n

NYSP provides a blend of athletic and educational programming for income-eligible children to help them build social skills, confidence and healthy lifestyles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a way for us to give back to the community and focus on our mission to improve the human condition,\u201d said Demond Pryor, director of the Office of Recreational Services, which is overseeing this year\u2019s camp. \u201cThe NYSP gives individuals in this community who otherwise might not have the chance to go to a big-time summer camp outside of Toledo a wonderful opportunity right here on our campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of this year\u2019s camp, the Toledo-based Ohio Council of Community Schools provided UToledo a $1.5 million sponsorship endowment to ensure the future of the camp.<\/p>\n

Though originally funded by the federal government, the University has relied on fundraising and in-kind donations to cover the cost of the NYSP since 2006 after federal funding was eliminated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the generous donation by the OCCS, we will be able to provide area kids access to this camp for years to come,\u201d Pryor said. \u201cThis affords kids in our community an opportunity not only to learn and play, but also introduces them to our campus and our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

With fewer campers than what UToledo has averaged recently, Pryor said this year\u2019s program is serving as a transition year as the University plans for larger camps in the future.<\/p>\n

The two-week program began Monday, June 6, and runs through Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
