Parking will be free in Area 1N off of University Hills Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe College of Arts and Letters is so pleased to be able to bring such an important figure to the campus community and the city of Toledo,\u201d said Dr. Melissa Gregory, interim dean of the College of Arts and Letters. \u201cKushner is not only the most well-recognized playwright in the United States but also a brilliant storyteller who brings a wealth of fascinating experiences to the table. This will be a highly engaging event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The annual lecture is made possible by the Shapiro endowment left by Dr. Edward Shapiro, professor emeritus of economics who retired in 1989, to provide opportunities for the University to bring world-renowned speakers to Toledo.<\/p>\n<p>Past Shapiro Distinguished Lecture speakers include Elie Wiesel, Toni Morrison, Audra McDonald and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Born in New York City in 1956 and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Kushner is a celebrated and acclaimed playwright whose works include \u201cA Bright Room Called Day,\u201d \u201cSlavs!\u201d, \u201cHydrotaphia\u201d and \u201cHomebody\/Kabul,\u201d as well as the musical \u201cCaroline, or Change\u201d and the opera \u201cA Blizzard on Marblehead Neck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kushner received an Emmy Award for his adaptation of \u201cAngels in America\u201d to an HBO miniseries directed by Mike Nichols and received a pair of screenwriting Oscar nominations for the Steven Spielberg films \u201cMunich\u201d and \u201cLincoln.\u201d In 2021, he wrote the screenplay to Spielberg\u2019s critically acclaimed remake of \u201cWest Side Story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kushner also received a Spirit of Justice Award from the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, and a Cultural Achievement Award from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_16_2022\/pulitzer-prize-winning-playwright-to-speak-at-utoledo-sept-20-for-shapiro-lecture\"><img width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Kusher-Shapiro-Lecture-SIDE-150x150.jpg\" class=\"alignright tfe wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><p>The free, public event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Doermann Theatre in University Hall.
