Tammy Sprow and Dr. Harvey Popovich were the featured guests Tuesday at an event at The University of Toledo Medical Center marking the beginning of National Donate Life Month.<\/p>\n

Sprow\u2019s husband, Cory, became an organ donor after a fatal motor vehicle crash in late 2012. Popovich donated a kidney through UTMC\u2019s transplant program in 2018 to help a woman he\u2019d not previously met.<\/p>\n

Tammy Sprow and Dr. Harvey Popovich were the featured guests at a Tuesday event marking the beginning of National Donate Life Month and honoring those who have made the life-saving choice to be organ donors.<\/p><\/div>\n

Held each April, National Donate Life Month highlights the ongoing need for organ, eye and tissue donation and honors those whose donations have helped save the lives of others.<\/p>\n

Nearly 104,000 people are currently on an organ transplant waitlist in the United States, including more than 2,600 in Ohio and nearly 2,400 in Michigan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen this idea came to me by way of a newspaper article about a woman who had donated a kidney here to save the life of her father, it occurred to me I could use the gifts God has given me to have a significant impact on the life of another human being,\u201d Popovich said.<\/p>\n

UTMC set a record in 2022, completing 200 kidney transplants, up from 174 in 2021.<\/p>\n
