{"id":79470,"date":"2023-04-17T04:00:23","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T08:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=79470"},"modified":"2023-04-18T08:36:31","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T12:36:31","slug":"utoledo-awarded-1-5-million-to-fight-algal-blooms-in-reservoirs-rivers-used-for-public-water-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_17_2023\/utoledo-awarded-1-5-million-to-fight-algal-blooms-in-reservoirs-rivers-used-for-public-water-supply","title":{"rendered":"UToledo Awarded $1.5 Million to Fight Algal Blooms in Reservoirs, Rivers Used for Public Water Supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at The University of Toledo are helping communities throughout northwest Ohio that don\u2019t draw drinking water from Lake Erie protect their raw water supplies from toxic algae.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded UToledo a three-year, $1.5 million grant to target Ohio\u2019s inland water sources and treatment plants with new monitoring and treatment methods to control harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their toxins.<\/p>\n<p>The team has already established that new instruments and methods work well under the conditions and types of cyanobacteria found in western Lake Erie.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79472\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230209_130157-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79472\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79472\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230209_130157-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"A body of water as it meets the shore. It's a reservoir for the city of Defiance.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230209_130157-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230209_130157-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230209_130157-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230209_130157-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-79472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A reservoir for the city of Defiance<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As part of their new project, the researchers will work with Defiance, Bowling Green and Wauseon to apply these new methods to HABs in reservoirs those cities use for drinking water production.<\/p>\n<p>The UToledo engineers and scientists working on the water quality project also will work to understand the dynamics of HABs in the Maumee River, which flows into Lake Erie and is used as a water source for public water systems and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Maumee River flows through many cities and farmlands in northern Ohio and is the major conduit of nutrients to the western basin of Lake Erie, causing the harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie,\u201d said Dr. Youngwoo Seo, a professor of civil and environmental engineering and chemical engineering, and leader of the new project. \u201cHarmful algal blooms in the Maumee River and reservoirs remain poorly understood.
