This week, his collegiate experience will end with his bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies from University College.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58894\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58894\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58894\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Graduation-Cap_blue-500x500-e1586882554282.png\" alt=\"Graduation Cap\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>CELEBRATING SUCCESS:<\/strong>\u00a0UToledo recognizes the Class of 2023 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/commencement\/\">spring commencement<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After walking away from his formal training to be a machinist when he received an offer from Chrysler, Kruszka slowly worked his way up the ranks in the automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p>The next 30 years offered numerous opportunities for growth and development, but in 2017, Kruszka hit a roadblock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized that all my career options had been exhausted and my opportunities to move up were being severely limited by not having a bachelor&#8217;s degree,\u201d Kruszka said. \u201cI decided that it was time to finish at one of the three degrees that I had started over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following months of research, he chose UToledo to <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(46, 46, 45)\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\">to finish his education and to\u00a0<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(46, 46, 45)\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\">pursue an Interdisciplinary Studies degree, with a focus on human resource management, organizational development and project management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Balancing schoolwork, his full-time job at Chrysler and taking care of his family was a difficult feat.<\/p>\n<p>It was made even more difficult last spring when Kruszka suffered a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cardiac event on St Patrick&#8217;s Day was not a surprise to me or my doctor \u2014 I was burning the candle at both ends since 2018 when I went back to school,\u201d he said. \u201cMy family was really giving me a hard time and had concerns about my health, but I just wanted to push through, graduate and then focus on my health again.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80156\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80156\" class=\"wp-image-80156 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Michael-Kruszka-and-family-STORY.jpg\" alt=\"UToledo graduating student Michael Kruszka poses with his wife and their three adult children. \" width=\"500\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Michael-Kruszka-and-family-STORY.jpg 500w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Michael-Kruszka-and-family-STORY-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-80156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Kruszka, who is graduating Saturday from University College, poses with his wife and their children, all of whom will be attending UToledo in fall.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His will and determination to complete his degree pushed him to the end, but reflecting on his experience, he realized he may have pushed himself too far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost made it, but looking back, your health is everything, I would have done some things differently to stay a bit more healthy,\u201d Kruszka said.<\/p>\n<p>Kruszka isn\u2019t the only Rocket in his family. His eldest daughter started a semester after him, and in fall, all three of his children will be studying at UToledo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we helped each other through our transitions to higher learning,\u201d he said. \u201cThey will have each other to lean on for support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before finishing his studies, Kruszka\u2019s work towards his degree afforded him more opportunities to further his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe auto industry is transitioning from internal combustion engines to electrification,\u201d Kruszka said. \u201cSo, there are a lot of different jobs with the company that I work for that didn&#8217;t exist just a few years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He will spend the first few weeks after graduating focusing on applying for a few of these positions.<\/p>\n<p>His other priority?
