The University of Toledo was recently awarded more than $1 million in State of Ohio funds for scholarships supporting students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).<\/p>\n
The Ohio Department of Higher Education announced the funding as part of its latest round of awards under the Choose Ohio First scholarship program. Intended to increase the state\u2019s competitiveness in STEM, Choose Ohio First awards competitive funding to Ohio colleges and universities to support students studying a slew of designated disciplines.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore than 750 students have benefited from a Choose Ohio First Scholarship at UToledo since 2009,\u201d said Dr. Scott Molitor, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. \u201cThese scholarships are a win-win for the students and for the communities that they strengthen across the state when they go on to in-demand careers in science, technology, engineering and math.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Ohio Department of Higher Education considers proposals annually from Ohio colleges and universities and provides funding to award Choose Ohio First scholarships to students who are Ohio residents. Colleges and universities also recruit, select and support their own Choose Ohio First Scholars.<\/p>\n
“These Choose Ohio First awardees, including University of Toledo, represent Ohio’s best when it comes to preparing STEM scholars for success in the workforce,” Ohio Chancellor Randy Gardner said. “I commend University of Toledo for its efforts in the Choose Ohio First program and for being among this latest group of deserving awardees.”<\/p>\n
Over the past two years, UToledo has been awarded more than $1.9 million from the State of Ohio and is able to award 33 scholarships per year at a minimum of $4,000 each year for up to four years or eight semesters of full-time coursework. The latest round of funding allows UToledo to provide scholarships to students in the following programs:<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0 Physics<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Health Sciences<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Speech Language Pathology<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Health Care Administration and Compliance<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Health Information Administration<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Radiation Therapy<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Respiratory Care<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Public Health<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Recreational Therapy<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Operations and Supply Chain Management<\/p>\n
This is in addition to funding received last year that allows UToledo to provide scholarships to students in the following programs:<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0 Pharmaceutics<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0 Pharmacy Administration<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Mathematics with an Actuarial Sciences concentration<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Construction Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology when paired with a Software Engineering minor<\/p>\n
The Doctor of Pharmacy program also is eligible only at the undergraduate level.<\/p>\n
Previously awarded Choose Ohio First scholarship programs at UToledo include the Improving Retention and Student Success in Computing (IMPRESS-C) Scholarship, the Choose Ohio for Data, Environment, Energy, Entrepreneurialism and Sustainability (COD3ES) Scholarship and the Academic Success Through Corporate Engagement, Networking and Training (ASCENT) Scholarship. The programs provide support for students across a range of programs offered by the College of Engineering.<\/p>\n
