{"id":833,"date":"2009-03-03T05:03:49","date_gmt":"2009-03-03T10:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utnews.utoledo.edu\/?p=833"},"modified":"2009-03-02T16:54:29","modified_gmt":"2009-03-02T21:54:29","slug":"ut-owens-toledo-public-schools-map-out-future-of-closer-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_03_2009\/ut-owens-toledo-public-schools-map-out-future-of-closer-cooperation","title":{"rendered":"UT, Owens, Toledo Public Schools map out future of closer cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toledo and northwest Ohio residents need to instill in their children the understanding that a high school degree is no longer adequate to successfully navigate the working world, trustees of Owens Community College and The University of Toledo and Toledo Public Schools members agreed at a historic first joint board meeting Feb. 24 on UT\u2019s Main Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to create a culture that says high school is not enough, that you need higher education to be successful,\u201d said Owens Trustee John Moore.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_840\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/joint-meeting-overall-shot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-840\" class=\"size-full wp-image-840\" title=\"joint-meeting-overall-shot\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/joint-meeting-overall-shot.jpg\" alt=\"Libbey Hall on Main Campus was filled as UT and Owens Community College trustees and Toledo Public Schools members met last week.\" width=\"432\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Libbey Hall on Main Campus was filled as UT and Owens Community College trustees and Toledo Public Schools members met last week.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The key to that culture, said TPS Superintendent John Foley, \u201cis to instill in students the importance of college early on in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By engaging students as young as kindergarten and coupling the expectation of a college degree with programs at Owens and UT that provide an opportunity to cover the cost of tuition, students will know the only barrier to a college degree is one\u2019s own work ethic.<\/p>\n<p>Thanking Owens and UT for the Owens Success program and the UT Guarantee program, TPS Board Member Lisa Sobecki spoke about the increasing number of families suddenly realizing the financial barrier had been removed or reduced, making college an obtainable goal for their children.<\/p>\n<p>TPS School Board Member Bob Vasquez said that as stronger collaboration results in an increasing number of college graduates, northwest Ohio will be able to use that brainpower to fuel the sort of economic engine needed in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Following excerpts from Ohio Gov.
