{"id":84053,"date":"2024-01-22T03:30:20","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T07:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=84053"},"modified":"2024-01-23T09:49:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T13:49:56","slug":"omss-offering-students-only-diversity-workshops-beginning-jan-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_22_2024\/omss-offering-students-only-diversity-workshops-beginning-jan-23","title":{"rendered":"OMSS Offering Students-Only Diversity Workshops Beginning Jan. 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of Multicultural Student Success is holding a series of diversity workshops throughout spring semester for students to increase self-awareness, unity and fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOMSS loves working with all students to educate on the topics of diversity, equity and inclusion,\u201d said Aleiah Jones, associate director of the Office of Multicultural Student Success. \u201cWe especially look forward to seeing students who participated in a fall session to continue their journey with us this spring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Diversity Workshop options are meant to build on each other and students are encouraged to start with \u201cAwareness of Self\u201d and move through the four workshops, all of which will be in the OMSS Lounge in Thompson Student Union Room 2500.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0 Awareness of Self; Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 5 p.m. <\/strong>In this workshop, students will define terms related to diversity, explore their own identity, and engage in conversations about how their identity has impacted their experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0 Awareness of Actions; Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, March 12, from 10 to 11 a.m. <\/strong>In this workshop, students will be given the opportunity to explore any stereotypes or biases they hold, engage in conversations about how stereotypes and biases can impact experiences, and how to effectively address microaggressions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0 Awareness of Institutions; Tuesday, March 26, from 10 to 11 a.m., and Tuesday, April 9, from 4 to 5 p.m.<\/strong>In this workshop, students will begin by identifying institutions that people receive messages from. After institutions are listed, students will define and discuss different \u201c-isms\u201d and the communities they impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0 Awareness of Current Events; Tuesday, April 16, from 4 to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, April 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. <\/strong>In this workshop, students will discuss current events and how the institutions and \u201c-isms\u201d from the previous Diversity Workshop play a role in those events.
