{"id":86601,"date":"2024-05-14T03:20:56","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T07:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=86601"},"modified":"2024-05-16T09:30:51","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T13:30:51","slug":"two-pharmacy-faculty-members-receive-under-40-awards-from-state-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_14_2024\/two-pharmacy-faculty-members-receive-under-40-awards-from-state-association","title":{"rendered":"Two Pharmacy Faculty Members Receive Under 40 Awards From State Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pair of The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty members were recently honored with the Ohio Pharmacists Association\u2019s Under 40 Award.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Marilee Clemons, a clinical associate lecturer of pharmacy practice, and Dr. Mitchell Howard, a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, were among this year\u2019s 10 recipients of the award, which was presented last month during the association\u2019s annual conference in Columbus.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_86602\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86602\" class=\"wp-image-86602\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Dr.-Mitchell-Howard-and-Dr.-Marilee-Clemons.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Mitchell Howard and Dr. Marilee Clemons, who also will serve as a district trustee for the Ohio Pharmacists Association, were among 10 pharmacists selected for the award.\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Dr.-Mitchell-Howard-and-Dr.-Marilee-Clemons.jpg 465w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Dr.-Mitchell-Howard-and-Dr.-Marilee-Clemons-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-86602\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Mitchell Howard and Dr. Marilee Clemons, who also will serve as a district trustee for the Ohio Pharmacists Association, were among 10 pharmacists selected for the award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Clemons also began a two-year term as the association\u2019s District 2 trustee during the annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The association\u2019s Under 40 Award recognizes Ohio pharmacists under the age of 40 for their leadership, excellence and vision in the practice of pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>An ambulatory care pharmacist, Clemons played a key role in the expansion of collaborative practice agreements within UToledo\u2019s general internal medicine clinics and is heavily involved in experiential education for Pharm.D. students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI care about the profession of pharmacy, I want to see it advance and I want to bring the students along with that,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m proud to have helped create a robust program of embedded clinical pharmacists within our clinics, which directly benefits our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collaborative practice agreements allow clinical pharmacists working under a supervising physician to play a more direct role in patient care, ordering and reviewing laboratory results and modifying drug regimens.<\/p>\n<p>Howard, who received his Pharm.D. from UToledo, and currently serves as an experiential director and the residency program director in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, was recognized for his extensive community service and his efforts to explore better integrating pharmacy into sports medicine through research and collaboration with others around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Howard is an active volunteer with the student-led UToledo CommunityCare Clinics, has undertaken numerous international medical mission trips and has worked with the Toledo YMCA on medication education initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be recognized by your peers is humbling,\u201d Howard said. \u201cI think we find ourselves very busy in the day-to-day workflow, whether that\u2019s working in a community pharmacy, working in a clinic or working as an educator. This is a moment to step back, take a deep breath and reflect on how far we\u2019ve come since we started our careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howard and Clemons both joined UToledo in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud to see Dr. Clemons and Dr. Howard receive the Under 40 awards.
