{"id":88378,"date":"2024-09-19T04:00:05","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T08:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=88378"},"modified":"2024-09-23T08:40:38","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T12:40:38","slug":"utoledo-receives-more-than-3-8-million-for-novel-hypertension-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/09_19_2024\/utoledo-receives-more-than-3-8-million-for-novel-hypertension-research","title":{"rendered":"UToledo Receives More Than $3.8 Million for Novel Hypertension Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The drug market is awash with hypertension medications, but even with dozens of options available some people find it difficult getting their blood pressure under control.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at The University of Toledo believe one solution to overcoming uncontrolled hypertension may come from a seemingly unlikely target: the gut.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82625\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82625\" class=\"wp-image-82625\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/12072022-4858.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Bina Joe, a Distinguished University Professor and chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology who has devoted much of her career to understanding the connection between gut bacteria and blood pressure regulation, recently published new research showing that it\u2019s possible to treat hypertension using engineered bacteria.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/12072022-4858.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/12072022-4858-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Bina Joe, a Distinguished University Professor and chair of the UToledo Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, received a $3.85 million federal grant to study how bacteria-driven changes to bile acids in the gut affect blood pressure.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is unquestionably a link between what happens in our gut and how well our blood pressure is regulated,\u201d said Dr. Bina Joe, Distinguished University Professor and chair of the UToledo Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. \u201cAs we dig deeper and learn more, we are getting closer to the potential of totally new methods for treating hypertension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe recently received a five-year, $3.85 million grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute to investigate how bacteria-driven changes to bile acids in the gut affect blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>A pioneer in the field of hypertension research, Joe\u2019s lab previously found that lower levels of conjugated bile acids correlated with higher blood pressure readings in both animal models and humans.<\/p>\n<p>Bile acids are produced in the liver and delivered to the gut, where they play an important role in digestion. Bile acids are naturally conjugated \u2014 or joined \u2014 with the amino acids taurine and glycine when they are released to the gut.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published last year in the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/jhypertension\/fulltext\/2023\/06000\/conjugated_bile_acids_are_nutritionally.13.aspx\">Journal of Hypertension<\/a>, Joe\u2019s lab detailed how bacteria can rearrange the chemical structure of those conjugated bile acids in the gut, changing them to unconjugated bile acids.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the research show that more unconjugated bile acid was predictive of hypertension, but it also found higher populations of a particular bacterium in hypertensive test subjects that is known to deconjugate bile acids.<\/p>\n<p>By feeding hypertensive animal models taurine or taurocholic acid supplements, Joe\u2019s team was able to increase the amount of conjugated bile acid in their gut and in turn reduce their blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The new NIH-supported research seeks to build on those earlier findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overarching hypothesis of this proposal is that conjugated bile acids are novel antihypertensive metabolites,\u201d Joe said. \u201cOur research will focus on uncovering why conjugated bile acids depleted in hypertension and identifying the mechanism by which those conjugated bile acids protect against hypertension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with a special line of germ-free animal models that completely lack microbiota, Joe and her team will be able to zero in on the role specific gut bacteria play in depleting or enhancing the conjugated bile acids.<\/p>\n<p>UToledo researchers also will study the specific pathways by which taurocholic acid lowers hypertension. That knowledge, Joe said, is critical before using taurine\/taurocholic acid as potential treatment for hypertension can be advanced beyond animal studies.<\/p>\n<p>If that treatment were to move forward, it would be the first anti-hypertensive medication that targets the gut-liver axis.<\/p>\n<p>There are several classes of available blood pressure medications, but in general they target the brain, heart or kidneys to prevent blood vessels from narrowing, lower the heart rate or remove excess water and sodium from the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite all of the available medications, the prevalence of hypertension is on the rise and treatment-resistant hypertension remains a real issue,\u201d Joe said.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of U.S. adults have hypertension, now defined as blood pressure at or above 130\/80. Of those being treated for hypertension, between 10% and 20% did not have their blood pressure under control despite aggressive measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe at The University of Toledo are attacking this problem with a new thought,\u201d Joe said. \u201cThe gut and the bacteria that call it home are targets that science has missed in the past.
