{"id":90079,"date":"2024-12-13T04:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T08:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=90079"},"modified":"2025-02-05T11:09:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T15:09:24","slug":"2024-year-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/12_13_2024\/2024-year-in-review","title":{"rendered":"2024 Year in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From high-profile, federally funded research to on-campus celebrations, The University of Toledo was abuzz with activity in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>UToledo, which maintained its status as one of the top universities in the country according to U.S. News and World Report, wrapped up major renovations to the engineering complex and announced an updated $300 million campus master plan that calls for a new welcome center and science building.<\/p>\n<p>Toledo Athletics continued its positive momentum, capturing several conference titles and claiming its third straight Cartwright Award from the Mid-American Conference, which recognizes excellence in academics, athletics and citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>UToledo brought the community to campus with a number of events, including a once-in-a-lifetime viewing party for the April 8 total solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>And University faculty continued to leverage their research expertise, securing competitive grants to study solar energy, cancer, hypertension, Alzheimer\u2019s disease and more.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a look back at some of the biggest UToledo stories of 2024.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>January<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_90082\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90082\" class=\"wp-image-90082\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Puneet-Sindhwani-Aquabliation-Jan-2024-1.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Puneet Sindhwani, chair of the UTMC Department of Urology, completed the area\u2019s first Aquablation therapy in January. The procedure uses a heat-free water jet to treat the urinary symptoms associated with enlarged prostate.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The University of Toledo Medical Center performed the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_27_2024\/utmc-adds-new-minimally-invasive-option-for-treating-enlarged-prostate\">first Aquablation procedure<\/a> in northwest Ohio. The innovative and minimally invasive treatment option for enlarged prostate uses high-pressure water to relieve urinary symptoms while preserving sexual function.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The UToledo Athletic Department announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_12_2024\/university-of-toledo-athletics-announces-formation-of-leadership-fan-council\">Leadership Fan Council<\/a>, which gives fans a stronger voice and greater perspective into the operations of the department.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo and the city of Toledo honored Dr. Martin Luther King with the 23rd annual <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_08_2024\/virtual-mlk-unity-day-celebration-to-honor-civil-rights-leader-5\">Unity Day Celebration<\/a>. Rosa Alicia Clemente, an organizer, independent journalist, producer and scholar activist, was the keynote speaker at the virtual event.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Black Thought, co-founder of the legendary band The Roots and a three-time Grammy Award winner, was among the featured speakers at the 40th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/01_23_2024\/40th-annual-utoledo-conference-for-aspiring-minority-youth-scheduled-jan-27\">Conference for Aspiring Minority Youth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>February<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_02_2024\/utoledo-professor-emeritus-named-american-astronomical-society-fellow\">American Astronomical Society<\/a> named Dr. Steven Federman, professor emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, among its newest class of Fellows for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_06_2024\/theatre-professor-named-united-states-institute-for-theatre-technology-fellow\">United States Institute for Theatre Technology<\/a> chose Holly Monsos, chair of the Department of Theatre and Film, as one its 2024 Fellows.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The University of Toledo was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_07_2024\/u-s-news-world-report-ranks-utoledo-among-best-online-degree-programs-in-2024\">ranked No. 115<\/a> in the U.S. News &amp; World Report list of 2024 best online undergraduate programs, up 35 spots from the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Dr. Anne Medling, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, was chosen by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement as a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_12_2024\/utoledo-astronomer-receives-prestigious-cottrell-scholar-award\">2024 Cottrell Scholar<\/a>. The annual awards recognize early-career teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics and astronomy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90083\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90083\" class=\"wp-image-90083\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Welcome-Center-Rendering.jpg\" alt=\"A new welcome center connected to Scott and Tucker halls, shown here in conceptual form, is part of an updated campus master plan that was unveiled in February.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Welcome-Center-Rendering.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Welcome-Center-Rendering-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new welcome center connected to Scott and Tucker halls, shown here in conceptual form, is part of an updated campus master plan that was unveiled in February.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Dr. Ngalula Sandrine Mubenga, an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering Technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_23_2024\/utoledo-engineering-professor-speaks-at-united-nations\">spoke at the United Nation\u2019s headquarters<\/a> during the 9th International Day of Women and Girls Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The Board of Trustees approved a resolution in support of an updated, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_28_2024\/updated-campus-master-plan-invests-in-utoledos-future\">$300 million campus master plan<\/a> that includes plans for a new welcome center, a state-of-the-art science building and other campus upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Leaders from UToledo, Toledo Public Schools and Owens Community College signed a letter of intent formalizing an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_27_2024\/utoledo-owens-and-tps-partner-on-opportunities-for-scott-park-campus\">agreement<\/a> to work together on an initiative aimed at bringing new educational opportunities to the Scott Park Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The John B. and Lillian E. Neff College of Business and Innovation hosted the ninth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_19_2024\/future-sales-leaders-take-center-stage-at-utoledo-invitational-sales-competition\">UToledo Invitational Sales Competition<\/a>, drawing more than 100 sales students from 35 universities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The College of Engineering\u2019s award-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_20_2024\/introduce-a-girl-to-engineering-series-to-inspire-stem-careers\">Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day<\/a>, held in February and March, welcomed more than 750 seventh and eighth grade girls to campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Dr. Michael Boyd, professor of piano, and Dr. Jon Elhai, professor of psychology, were named <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_28_2024\/distinguished-university-professors-announced-4\">Distinguished University Professors,<\/a> recognizing their achievements in teaching, research, scholarship and professional service.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo celebrated Black History month throughout February, with events that included a tour of the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_15_2024\/exploring-black-history\">African American Legacy Project of Northwest Ohio<\/a> with museum founder and director Robert Smith.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>March<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The Rocket men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball teams both claimed outright Mid-American Conference championships. It was the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_10_2024\/toledo-captures-outright-mac-crown-no-1-seed-in-mac-tournament\">third straight title for the women<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_09_2024\/champions-again-toledo-captures-fourth-straight-outright-mac-title\">fourth straight for the men<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/02_28_2024\/eclipse-expert-presents-doermann-distinguished-lecture-on-march-12\">alumnus Fred Espenak<\/a> \u2014 also known as Mr. Eclipse \u2014 shared stories from his 50 years of eclipse-viewing in the Doermann Distinguished Lecture and discussed what to expect during Toledo\u2019s upcoming solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90086\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90086\" class=\"wp-image-90086\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WBB06143_EDITED.jpg\" alt=\"The Toledo women\u2019s basketball team captured their third consecutive outright Mid-American Conference Championship with an 83-61 victory over Kent State in March.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WBB06143_EDITED.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WBB06143_EDITED-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Toledo women\u2019s basketball team captured their third consecutive outright Mid-American Conference Championship with an 83-61 victory over Kent State in March.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The National Science Foundation presented <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_14_2024\/utoledo-geophysicist-receives-nsf-career-award\"> Kennedy Doro<\/a>, an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_15_2024\/utoledo-engineering-professor-receives-nsf-career-award\">Dr. Abbas Semnani,<\/a> an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with Faculty Early Career Development Program awards. The five-year research awards are aimed at supporting early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Dr. Melissa Gregory was named <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_14_2024\/interim-leader-named-permanent-dean-of-arts-and-letters\">permanent dean<\/a> of the College of Arts and Letters following a national search. Gregory, who joined UToledo in 2002, had previously served as interim dean of the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 More than 160 fourth-year medical students matched into residency programs in 33 states. Celebrated at medical schools across the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_18_2024\/utoledo-medical-students-celebrate-match-day-2\">Match Day<\/a> is one of the most anticipated moments for aspiring physicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The seventh annual <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_22_2024\/day-of-giving-raises-1-7-million\">Rocket Forward Day of Giving<\/a> raised more than $1.7 million from 2,460 donors through online donations and live event participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo researchers were awarded $1.2 million from the Ohio Department of Higher Education\u2019s Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative. The funding supports <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_25_2024\/utoledo-receives-1-2-million-from-states-harmful-algal-bloom-research-initiative\">projects<\/a> aimed at mitigating harmful algal blooms, guiding wetland restoration, studying technologies for water treatment systems, evaluating the effect of climate change on nutrient runoff, and studying the health effects of cyanotoxins produced during harmful algal blooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 More than 600 students took part in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/03_19_2024\/utoledo-students-to-give-back-to-community-through-march-23-big-event\">Big Event<\/a>, volunteering their time and skills at sites throughout the Toledo area. The Big Event is the largest, single-day student-run service project at UToledo.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>April<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UTMC recognized national Donate Life Month, hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_01_2024\/utmc-hosting-april-3-flag-raising-ceremony-in-honor-of-national-donate-life-month\">flag raising<\/a> outside the hospital and honoring individuals who chose to become living kidney donors through UTMC at a banquet.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_03_2024\/empowering-community-and-healthcare-leaders-with-new-symposium\">inaugural UToledo Healthcare Symposium<\/a> in downtown Toledo, brought together healthcare and community leaders for a discussion on improving health through compassionate care, innovative thinking and community collaboration<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo celebrated its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_08_2024\/songfest-performance\">87th annual Songfest<\/a>, with UToledo students dancing and singing to raise more than $20,000 for Sunshine Communities, a local nonprofit that aims to support people of all ages with developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_07_2024\/utoledo-aligns-colleges-to-strengthen-academic-programs\">strategic realignment<\/a> of colleges to bring closer together faculty and students engaged in similar academic programs for increased collaboration. The University plans to merge the College of Nursing and College of Health and Human Services into one college and to merge the College of Arts and Letters with the Judith Herb College of Education.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo hosted thousands of visitors at Glass Bowl Stadium and on Centennial Mall for the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_09_2024\/experiencing-totality-2\">once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse<\/a>, which shrouded Toledo in partial darkness for nearly two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 U.S. News and World Report ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_09_2024\/u-s-news-rankings-place-utoledo-among-countrys-best-graduate-programs\">11 UToledo graduate programs<\/a> among the best in the nation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90080\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90080\" class=\"wp-image-90080\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Solar-Eclipse-Viewing-04082024-5877a.jpg\" alt=\"Fatemeh Asnaashary and daughter, Zahra, from Dearborn, Michigan, were among the hundreds of eclipse watchers in Glass Bowl Stadium in April.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Solar-Eclipse-Viewing-04082024-5877a.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Solar-Eclipse-Viewing-04082024-5877a-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fatemeh Asnaashary and daughter, Zahra, from Dearborn, Michigan, were among the hundreds of eclipse watchers in Glass Bowl Stadium in April.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 For the first time, UToledo had multiple Goldwater Scholars in the same year. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_11_2024\/biology-sophomore-researching-cell-behavior-earns-prestigious-goldwater-scholarship\">Sophia Durham<\/a>, a sophomore studying biology, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_12_2024\/biochemistry-junior-focused-on-organic-chemistry-earns-prestigious-goldwater-scholarship\">Chloe Villa<\/a>, a junior majoring in biochemistry, each received the prestigious award.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The men\u2019s tennis team knocked off No. 1 seed Western Michigan in the 2024 Mid-American Conference Tournament to claim its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_22_2024\/toledo-defeats-western-michigan-4-1-to-claim-second-straight-mac-tournament-crown\">second consecutive tournament crown<\/a>, while the women\u2019s tennis team beat Miami to earn its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_29_2024\/toledo-crowned-mac-tournament-champions-for-first-time-in-history\">first tournament championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo students celebrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_25_2024\/celebrating-holi-toledo\">Hindu festival Holi<\/a> with an event symbolizing the arrival of spring, the end of winter and the blossoming of love.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Rockets cornerback Qyinyon Mitchell was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_26_2024\/toledo-cornerback-selected-as-no-22-overall-pick-in-nfl-draft-by-philadelphia\">selected No. 22 overall<\/a> in the 2024 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming the first Rocket taken in the first round in two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The College of Engineering held its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_23_2024\/college-of-engineering-adds-research-showcase-to-april-26-senior-design-expo\">Senior Design Expo<\/a>. For the first time, the event was combined with a new Day of Research, highlighting additional student and faculty research activities in the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Sheri Benton, a senior lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature; Dr. Claire Cohen, senior lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry; and Michelle Davidson, senior lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature, were <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_25_2024\/three-distinguished-university-lecturers-named-3\">named Distinguished University Lecturers<\/a> in recognition of their commitment to advancing student learning and facilitating and supporting student success.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_23_2024\/sparkling-fun\">RocketFest<\/a> featured a weeklong series of events and activities, including a bonfire, karaoke and stuff-a-plush as part of Student Appreciation Week.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The UToledo Board of Trustees <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_29_2024\/board-of-trustees-names-interim-president\">appointed Matt Schroeder<\/a> interim president following the departure of Dr. Gregory Postel who accepted a position at University of Cincinnati. Schroeder previously served as executive vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>May<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Barend Botha secured his second <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_01_2024\/rocket-senior-repeats-as-mac-champion-with-11-under-par-205\">straight conference title<\/a> in men\u2019s golf, becoming the first to do so in more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90092\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90092\" class=\"wp-image-90092\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/AA9I0032-ROCKY-2024-Spring-Commencement-MAIN.jpg\" alt=\"Rocky fist bumps Sophie Fisher during the spring commencement ceremony in May. Fisher graduated cum laude with a bachelor\u2019s degree in university studies from University College.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/04_18_2024\/utoledo-to-celebrate-graduates-at-spring-commencement-ceremonies\">spring commencement<\/a> conferring more than 2,500 degrees and graduate certificates throughout the weekend, including 189 doctoral, 558 master\u2019s, 1,507 bachelor\u2019s and 83 associate\u2019s degrees, as well as 112 juris doctors.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo Health celebrated its new, 37-foot-long <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_06_2024\/utmc-celebrates-delivery-of-new-mobile-health-clinic\">mobile health unit<\/a>. Barbee previously led UTMC from 2016 to 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 A new study of Alzheimer\u2019s disease led by Dr. Robert Smith, professor and chair of the Department of Neurosciences and Psychiatry, received nearly $4 million from the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_05_2024\/utoledo-researcher-leads-moonshot-alzheimers-project\">National Institute on Aging<\/a>. The project seeks to unlock new clues about the starting point and progression of Alzheimer\u2019s disease by taking a clean-slate approach to the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross country teams both captured MAC championships. The women\u2019s team, led by first-place finisher Mercy Kinyanjui, claimed its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_05_2024\/womens-cross-country-makes-history-with-fourth-consecutive-mac-championship\">fourth consecutive<\/a> conference title, while the men, led by Dominic Serem\u2019s first-place finish, earned their <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_05_2024\/mens-cross-country-captures-first-mac-championship-in-program-history\">first ever<\/a> conference title.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 UToledo was again named one of the best schools in the country for its support of military-connected students by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/11_05_2024\/utoledo-named-a-top-school-for-veterans\">Military Times<\/a>. The University ranked second in Ohio and 10th in the Midwest. UToledo is set to confer 1,486 degrees and graduate certificates during two ceremonies inside John F.
