They were among more than 1,200 students, employees and alumni who signed up for the 2023 Big Event.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/BIG-Event-Side.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/BIG-Event-Side-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-78882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Big Event, the largest, single-day student-run service project at The University of Toledo, is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis event reflects our commitment as Rockets to uplifting those in our community,\u201d said Shiloh Walz, a senior scheduled to graduate in May with a bachelor\u2019s degree in management who is president of the BIG Event. \u201cThe BIG Event brings together local students who volunteer their time, nonprofits that benefit from a day of service, and local businesses and UToledo that contribute financially to make it all happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BIG Event kicks off at The University of Toledo Student Recreation Center at 9:30 a.m. Participants will then depart for their local Toledo service sites to provide a day of service including the Aurora Project Inc., Ronald McDonald House, Islamic Food Bank of Toledo, Toledo Area Metroparks and various community gardens.<\/p>\n<p>This year more than 500 hundred students from dozens of student organizations are expected to volunteer for the community-sponsored event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, this event is important because Toledo has served as my home for the past four years, and it provides a chance to give back, connect with others and make a tangible difference in the lives of those around us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ashton Widenhoefer, a junior nursing student who serves as director of marketing for the BIG Event, said she joined the student-run service project to help create a positive impact on the community that has given so much to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBIG Event is a reminder of the power of community and demonstrates how even small acts of service can make a lasting impact on those around us. It is a privilege to give back to the community that supports our University, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to do so.
