{"id":92850,"date":"2025-05-22T03:45:45","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T07:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/?p=92850"},"modified":"2025-05-27T10:14:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T14:14:22","slug":"utoledo-engineer-to-teach-research-in-south-africa-as-fulbright-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/index.php\/05_22_2025\/utoledo-engineer-to-teach-research-in-south-africa-as-fulbright-scholar","title":{"rendered":"UToledo Engineer to Teach, Research in South Africa as Fulbright Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toledo\u2019s Dr. Ngalula Sandrine Mubenga will advance her work with renewable energy systems as a Fulbright Scholar in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Mubenga will work alongside students and faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from July to May, 2026, through the prestigious educational and cultural exchange program overseen by the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_92851\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92851\" class=\"wp-image-92851\" src=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ngalula-sandrine-mubenga-04292025-7019.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Dr. Ngalula Sandrine Mubenga, an associate professor in the Department of Engineering Technology.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ngalula-sandrine-mubenga-04292025-7019.jpg 748w, https:\/\/news.utoledo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ngalula-sandrine-mubenga-04292025-7019-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-92851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Ngalula Sandrine Mubenga is an associate professor in the Department of Engineering Technology.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting opportunity,\u201d said Mubenga, an associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/engineering\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>. \u201cI am looking forward to this opportunity to use my cultural synergies and intellectual background to foster positive relationships between the U.S. and Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mubenga specializes in renewable energy, electric vehicles and battery management systems, approaching these areas as an educator and researcher as well as entrepreneur who led a solar panel development and installation company in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.<\/p>\n<p>At the University of the Witwatersrand, she will teach and conduct research on renewable energy systems. Her research will explore the use of solar powered energy systems to help mitigate the excessive electrical load shedding that the national public utility employs to prevent overloading the country\u2019s electric grid.<\/p>\n<p>Load shedding results in rolling blackouts across South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRolling blackouts adversely impact the quality of life,\u201d Mubenga said. \u201cI&#8217;m interested in exploring whether residential solar panel systems with battery storage could mitigate load shedding and allow residents to offset their electrical consumption with the excess energy they generate and supply to the national grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Congress established the Fulbright Program in 1946 to increase mutual understanding and support friendly and peaceful relations among people of the United States and people of other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Fulbright Scholar Program specifically supports college and university faculty, administrators and researchers, as well as artists and professionals, with fellowships that enable U.S. Scholars to go abroad and Visiting Scholars to come to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Fulbright Award is a tremendous honor for Dr. Sandrine Mubenga and a moment of great pride for the entire College of Engineering,\u201d said Dr. Mohammad Elahinia, dean of the College of Engineering. \u201cSandrine is a distinguished faculty member in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoledo.edu\/engineering\/engineering-technology\/\">Engineering Technology Department<\/a>, known for her impactful research in areas like battery management systems and renewable energy, as well as her dedication to STEM education.
