Britt<\/p><\/div>The president of the American College of Surgeons will visit The University of Toledo Medical Center this week to discuss surgical education.<\/p>\n

Dr. L.D. Britt, a highly regarded general and critical care surgeon, will give a lecture titled \u201cPenetrating Trauma Management \u2014 2010: What Is Actually Evidence-Based Practice?\u201d at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, in Health Education Building Room 103. <\/p>\n

His free, public talk will focus on the evaluation of penetrating trauma and the treatment options for such injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe severity of diseases and injuries necessitating surgical intervention has not diminished,\u201d Britt said. \u201cMore than ever before, there is a demand today for the most highly trained surgeon. As a result, there is no higher priority in medicine than the initial and ongoing education of the surgeon.”<\/p>\n

Britt serves as the president of the Board of Regents for the American College of Surgeons, which is a scientific and educational association of surgeons founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient.<\/p>\n

A native of Suffolk, Va., Britt is the Brickhouse Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. He is the first African American in the country to have an endowed chair in surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our great fortune to have the 91st president of the American College of Surgeons join us for an academic discussion about surgical education and reforming our health-care system,\u201d said Dr. Mallory Williams, UT associate professor of surgery and chief of trauma, critical care and acute care surgery. \u201cDr. Britt is a transformative leader in American surgery who is sure to raise provocative questions and propose sound solutions to the challenges we face as an academic health-care center.\u201d<\/p>\n

Britt, a graduate of Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, is experienced in researching health-care disparities and aspects of critical surgical care.
