The 28th Annual UToledo Banned Books Vigil is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Carlson Library on the first floor.<\/p><\/div>\n
Thousands of schools, libraries and other groups will host a local event themed to the American Library Association\u2019s 2025 Banned Books Week slogan, \u201cCensorship is so 1984.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year, attacks on libraries and the right to express our views freely threaten the future of our democracy,\u201d said Dr. Paulette D. Kilmer, a retired UToledo faculty member and the coordinator of the UToledo Banned Books Coalition. \u201cMany of these attempts to censor originate in pressure groups and government officials.\u201d<\/p>\n
The American Library Association\u2019s Office for Intellectual Freedom reports that nearly 72% of censorship attempts in 2024 came from pressure groups and government officials.<\/p>\n
\u201cCensors targeted 2,452 different book titles during 2024,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen books disappear from library shelves, we lose our right to read freely and then we cannot think freely.\u201d<\/p>\n
Free books, door prizes and light refreshments will be provided throughout the event. Mini-subs will be served at noon followed by pizza at 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
The 28th Annual Banned Books Week Vigil will open with a welcome from Dr. Benjamin Myers, a professor and chair of the Department of Communication and Media, and Tom Atwood, a professor and dean of University Libraries, and continue with the following presentations:<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 9:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201c41 Years Late: \u20181984\u2019 has Arrived,\u201d by Dr. Daniel Compora, a professor in the Department of English Language and Literature.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 10 a.m. \u2014 \u201cDefying Book Bans: Acts of Resistance, Quiet and Loud,\u201d by Michelle Davidson, a Distinguished University Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 10:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cLessons on Tyranny,\u201d video presentation.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 11 a.m. \u2014 \u201cBanned Books Matching Game,\u201d with Joni McIntire, Poet Laureate of Lucas County.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 11:30 a.m. \u2014 \u201cDefending Women from Gender Ideology,\u201d by Dr. Sharon Barnes, department chair and associate professor of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 Noon \u2014 \u201cBooks Banned Over the Years,\u201d by Dr. Paulette D. Kilmer, a retired UToledo faculty member\u00a0and Banned Books Vigil coordinator.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 12:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cOne Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,\u201d by Saadia Farooq, a Bowling Green State University graduate student.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 1 p.m. \u2014 Dr. Linda Smith Lecture: “Veiled Nevermore: Masked Meanings and Mythologies of Edgar Allan Poe,\u201d by Jodi Jameson, an associate professor and nursing librarian at Mulford Library.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 2 p.m. \u2014 \u201cThe Space-Time Discontinuum: The Indigenous-European Discontent,\u201d by Dr. Barabara Mann, a UToledo professor emerita in the Jesup Scott Honors College.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 2:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cBanned Books Jeopardy,\u201d with Joni McIntire, Poet Laureate of Lucas County.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 3 p.m. \u2014 \u201cBook Banning and Book Theft: Book practical Responses to Ideological Action,\u201d by Robert Barringer, director of the Blissfield Library.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 3:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cTikTok Made Me Read It: Banned Books Go Viral,\u201d by Jeanne Kusina, director for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 4 p.m. \u2014 \u201cPoets During the McCarthy Era,\u201d by Joni McIntire, Poet Laureate of Lucas County.<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0 4:30 p.m. \u2014 \u201cThe Banning of Critical Thinking: In Song,\u201d Risa Cohen, director of Sing into Reading.<\/p>\n
