Through October, The University of Toledo\u2019s Information Security Office is proud to lead Cybersecurity Awareness Month.<\/p>\n
With its theme \u201cSecure Every Click \u2013 Stay Cyber Smart,\u201d the campaign urges all Rockets to be alert, informed and proactive in protecting their digital lives.<\/p>\n
Just as physical safety is essential on campus, cybersecurity plays a vital role in maintaining a secure academic environment. This year\u2019s focus includes four key areas: phishing awareness, social engineering, ransomware protection and AI cyber safety.<\/p>\n
Phishing attacks are designed to trick users into clicking malicious links, revealing sensitive information or downloading harmful attachments. To stay protected, be cautious of emails requesting UTAD credentials or payment details, links that lead to unfamiliar websites and messages that use urgency or threats to provoke action. Always take a moment to inspect messages before interacting and forward any suspicious emails to the University\u2019s abuse team for review.<\/p>\n
Social engineering attacks rely on manipulation rather than technical exploits. These tactics often involve impersonation, emotional appeals or exploiting trust to gain access to sensitive data or secure areas. Be wary of requests for confidential information without proper verification, unusual behavior from familiar contacts or pressure tactics. If something doesn\u2019t feel right, trust your instincts and report it.<\/p>\n
Ransomware is a growing threat that can lock users out of their files and demand payment for access. While University systems are protected, individual vigilance is key. Keep your software updated, avoid suspicious downloads and use strong passwords with multi-factor authentication. Regular backups to UToledo-approved cloud storage or encrypted drives are especially important during midterms and finals.<\/p>\n
As AI tools become more common in academic and professional settings, understanding their cybersecurity implications is essential. Always verify AI-generated content before sharing, avoid making sensitive decisions based solely on AI outputs and be mindful of the data you provide when using AI platforms. Responsible use of AI helps protect privacy and maintain data integrity in this evolving digital landscape.<\/p>\n
